Re: Third world America?

Hey Canuck, we have been living beyond our means for years. Everyone`s standard of living has to come down. We have exported our good jobs, illegals and Mike Rowe do the dirty jobs. I can tell you this, Obama`s adding to the entitlement culture, running $1.5 trillion deficts isn`t helping matters.

Re: Third world America?

The person below is a significant part of the problem.

We spend way too much.  It's a joke that schools don't have money.  Paying a second grade teacher $50000 is nuts.  Having multiple principals is too.  I went to a one room school where the kids swept the floors and did some of the janitorial jobs, the teacher did the rest.  Her pay was $800 a year and today I know more about finance, geography, history and computers than 90% of any graduating high school class.

It may seem I'm picking on schools but they are just one example of government waste.

Re: Third world America?

You do know we are in a recession with millions out of work? You do know that tax revenues are down because of the large unemployment and costly unemployment benefits. How would you suggest that we lower the deficit under current circumstances?

Stop spending? For what? Be specific please.

Re: Third world America?

Mr Kraft, let's start here. Private sectors create jobs, government is just too inept.

snip-

The Los Angeles City Controller said on Thursday the city's use of its share of the $800 billion federal stimulus fund has been disappointing.

The city received $111 million in stimulus under American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) approved by the Congress more than year ago

"I'm disappointed that we've only created or retained 55 jobs after receiving $111 million," says Wendy Greuel, the city's controller, while releasing an audit report.

"With our local unemployment rate over 12% we need to do a better job cutting red tape and putting Angelenos back to work,” she added.

According to the report, the Los Angeles Department of Public Works generated only 45.46 jobs (the fraction of a job created or retained correlates to the number of actual hours of work) after receiving $70.65 million, while the target was 238 jobs.

Similarly, the city’s department of transportation, armed with a $40.8 million fund, created only 9 jobs in place of an expected 26 jobs.

The audit says the numbers were disappointing due to bureaucratic red tape, absence of competitive bidding for projects in private sectors, inappropriate tracking of stimulus money and a laxity in bringing out timely job reports.

“While it doesn’t appear that any of the ARRA funds were misspent, the City needs to do a better job expediting the process

Re: Third world America?

Wehav, you have just totally blown my mind, by your standards it probably didn't take much, but your way off base, when it comes to what a teacher should be paid. I dare you, to take on a teaching job, buster, you wouldn't last the first day, even in kindergarten! I'd love you see you baby sit 25 screeming, yelling brats! My wife taught High School for 35 yrs, she was up at 5:30, stayed after school nearly everyday. When she got home she cleaned house until 6:00, then corrected papers until she fell asleep, then started the process all over the next day! You do NOT know what real work is! And you want to pay them $500 dollars? Your stupid, my friend! They deserve all their paid and more!! You do NOT know more than 5% of the current seniors, your just an old man with life experiences, that they don't yet have, that's all! You don't know squat!

Re: Third world America?

The stimulus already spent has been wasted, $200,000 per each temporary job created, it`s money we`ll never see again. Remove capital gains tax, even for just a year or two, it would be the equivalent to running a huge "15% OFF SALE!!!". On the cutting side, cut the farm program to the bone. Cut all gov`t workers salaries 10%, if nothing else to show the taxpayers they mean business. We have to look at entitlements, raise Soc Sec age a month or two, to incrementally make the program work. Ax Obamacare!!!! We can`t afford more entitlements!!! I`m sorry but a hundred years ago, you got sick, you got better or you died. That`s the way it`s been for 10,000 years. Why are we the privileged generation that deserves better? People who get the wrong hangnail removed sue the doctor and get set for life, gimme a break! Medicine, I`m sorry has advanced beyond people`s ability to afford, the 1950`s had a sustainable system. I really don`t know if it`s possible to climb out of the hole we`re in.  3/4 of the population depend on the gov`t in someway, you cut too much and unemployment goes up. A good start would be to ship out the illegals and put unemployed to work, butchering hogs and picking strawberries. Ax the unemployment checks and say "work or beg!". I know I didn`t say nicesy things, but it`ll get a heck of a lot worse if we don`t wake up.

Re: Third world America?

your opinion is worth as much as mine.  my sil is a teacher and my mother was a teacher, I've worked in the schools in a volunteer and I disagree with your thoughts and assessments.
