Canuck, coal is still a valuable energy source.  Solar and wind would be nothing without government subsidization and guess what, the 2 minute solar eclipse have some communities scrambling as to what to do about the Sun not shining for 2 minutes!  We are not ready to go cold turkey on "green energy" just yet and since everyone is irrationally scared of nuclear, coal has a place and we export coal too.  


I say, do not abandon the hillbillies, keep coal going and be transitioning them into making cars or solar panels.  I see where Mazda is going to build a car plant in the US, perhaps give them incentive to build in a coal dependent part of the country?
