Time for new taxes
It's time to tax some of the things that are going untaxed.
Why should a property owner be taxed for owning property but a scholar who has a degree that is worth at least a million dollars not pay a cent for that degree? Not only is it worth a million dollars but the person that got it had a lot of it paid for with tax dollars through school aid. It's been said that property taxes are one way to ensure people don't let a resource go to waste. The same is true for a degree. We shouldn't allow people to get a degree in engineering or teaching and then drive a truck or just sit home and plop out kids. They should be encouraged to use their degree and the best way is to tax that degree. If you still want to sit on your bottom fine but pay back something to society.
Another tax should be placed on retirement programs. We have people collecting thousands of dollars each month from a retirement program. Yes they pay income tax on that but that's all they pay. Meanwhile a business or farm, I guess that was redundant, has to pay property tax and income tax and social security tax. Meanwhile people sitting on retirement programs pay zilch. If you are receiving $40,000 a year from a retirement program that would indicate it has a minimum value of $800,000 if you think you're getting 5% interest and reality would indicate it's more likely that you would only get about 2% making that a $1,6 million dollar asset.
Then too why shouldn't we tax vehicles. Today a Ford SUV can cost $50,000 but all they pay is a license while somebody with a $50,000 house may pay 2 or 3 times that amount in property tax. If you can afford to have a high priced fancy vehicle then you can pay your fair share of taxes. Not only that but when you purchased a home you might have only paid $25,000 for it and somebody else decides what it's worth for tax purposes. A vehicle that you buy is a known price, you paid $50,000 so we tax you on that amount.
Well, there's 3 ways to help without raising taxes on the working people of the country.
Re: Time for new taxes
That's correct but you pay the property tax on the car yearly when you renew your plates. I wouldn't have an idea of what a $50K house in AZ would cost in property tax. Not even sure there is such a thing as a $50K house here. Our house tax is over $2100 year in Maricopa Co. and we are going to sell this one and move to one about 1000ft sq smaller in Pinal Co and it has over $1900 in property tax in that county.
