You are sorta halfways kinda on to something BA.
I have a very good number of friends and acquaintances who would easily described as middle class self described liberals who vote Democrat 99% of the time but tend to shy away from Dems who are “too left”. People who in reality, whether conscious of it or not, have spent most of their adult and working life’s making sure they didn't have to interact with what they casually would see or refer to as the redneck or hayseed or whatever culture. They didn’t understand or take seriously or recognize the scope or history that led to the Tea Party movement and for certain were mystified by the Trump voter (2 considerably different demos,btw, than anybody on the Right was willing to acknowledge up until recently).
I can’t count the number of times that I raised my voice and pounded on the table telling folks of that sort when they would chuckle or express mystification over what had happened “You don’t know any of these people! Your background gives you no frame of reference for what motivates them! They are very, very real and bring to the surface issues and matters that have been generally festering under the surface for decades. They have the material and the “out of the wilderness” leadership to do what they say they will.”
I can’t count the number of them who have made a point of telling me something to the effect of “You were right. How did you know that?”.
Crazy thing is, I’m seeing some of those same people as oblivious to how much trepidation lies in their cobbled up party nominating the least electable candidate again.
