EU Grants U.S. Beef Bigger Chunk of Import Quota – European Union (EU) ministers last week granted the U.S. a bigger chunk of its tariff-free annual 45,000-MT beef import quota much to the disappointment of countries like Uruguay and New Zealand.  When originally established, the quota was designed to satisfy a ruling against the EU by the WTO over beef access. But the WTO said the EU had to grant access to all nations equally and Uruguay and New Zealand produced the same quality product at a lower price.  However, officials went ahead and granted the U.S. a bigger share of the quota, asking other nations not to challenge the action upon pain of losing all access to the market.
