Re: What's wrong with being a kid?

Maybe parents should know a little more about what their children are doing?  I'm sure that no one in the school thought this was actually a weapon that could hurt someone BUT it is a gun look like and a younger child could think wellhe brought that in so I could bring the one my dad has not knowing the difference.  The schools are terrified with all the school shootings so they don't want even toy guns brought to school.  I don't think he should have gotten anything more than a conference with the principal about why they didn't allow such things but I'm not running the school.

Part of the indoctrination is following rules laid down by authority without question, regardless of how stupid the rule may be.

In the gun crazy US, his parents are to blame for introducing him to "guns" early. What should the school expect?

Re: What's wrong with being a kid?

I grew up in a farming community and behind every door there was at least one gun.  Some were prominently displayed and some were in a closet.

Nobody got shot and nobody was confused between a toy cap pistol and a real gun.  Makes me wonder just how dumb kids are today, we knew very well not to shoot another kid with a real gun.

Kids who were bullied by older or bigger kids didn't take a gun to school to solve their problem.  Sometimes they just suffered but sometimes they were advised by a parent to fight back.  And we had teachers that would step in and spank a kid that caused too much trouble.

We all managed to grow up and become productive citizens without shooting anybody, shooting ourselves or causing any firearms related problems.  I think the reasons was, we were part of a family with rules and expectations.  We had dads, dads we respected and feared.  We had moms that we loved and wouldn't have wanted to hurt.

Guns were just tools and were meant to be used in a certain way.  We had people that had returned from WWII and Korea who really didn't want any more violence but who knew how do deal with it if necessary.  They passed on some of that to us and not as something to glorify but something to avoid.

Excellent post wehave. I think a lot of the problem can be traced to the war on poverty when government replaced dad. Kids are no longer viewed as a gift from God but as a burden not to be cherished but to be used as pawns to gain some type of advantage.
