Why medical bills are so high?

My dentist no longer will pull a tooth.  He sends me to a "specialist" who charges $1100.00.  To pull a tooth!!

Now this in the NYTimes:  http://www.nytimes.com/2014/01/19/health/patients-costs-skyrocket-specialists-incomes-soar.html?hp&_...

Has anyone here experienced this kind of rip-off?

Re: Why medical bills are so high?

I think it`s to cover their liability of a general dentist.  I had a cap on a back tooth and the root got cracked and my dentist sent me to a endodonist for a second opinion, he gave my local dentist the okay to pull it though.  I also remember it being no big deal on getting my wisdom teeth pulled, but the dentist sent my Son to a oral surgeon to have them cut out. I`m sure that was a liability issue.  lawsuits these days are a "lottery jackpot" and I supose these specialists have more malpractice insurance...and the procedures aren`t cheap either.

Yup, the malpractice tort lawyers (almost ALL liberals, I might add) make the costs sky high. The Left wing dictatorship costs Americans dearly.

What sh!t Craig. They charge those prices because they can. They have financially fat HCFs to foot the bill.

What proof do you have that naughty lawyers are all liberals? To even suggest this all happened under Obama is disgustingly absurd. It has been happened since you guys wouldn't adopt socialised medicine and it flourished under schrub. As a
Good church going Christian peddling lies like that puts you in the same bracket as the thieves this thread is about.

Re: Why medical bills are so high?

BA, Yes and our local dentist gets a referral fee outtA the deal, too. Our local Forest City guy sent me to an endodontist to have some type of a root canal. so , I go with xrays in hand and the guy examines it and says i'll have to make an appointment. I say "that's why I'm here. Lets do it".  His reply, "No this is just a consult." And that will be $125. Good grief! Another appointment and $1300. My arm still hurts when I think about writing that check.  conservATIves say it's because of malpractice insurance driven by lawsuits and my libertarian/farmer response it that it's just greed on the part of health care providers. They can charge whatever they want and if we won't pay it someone else will. There's areason guys go to the texas border to get work done.

Re: Why medical bills are so high?

Craig and Ida,  my dentist has a partner that accidentally injected a nerve on a patient and it darned near killed him.  The patient sued and I mean he literally became a millionaire.  Bruce will say I`m using anecdotes, however that`s what life is, a series of anecdotes and at dentist conventions other dentists hear these true stories and get very carefull  take extra X-rays, buy more insurance passing the cost on to us, sent us to a specialist to shift their liability.   It`s like a farmer buying extra umbrella insurance coverage, a farmer has alot of assets in in a lawsuit there are those that look at that as a lottery jackpot.  i`m not saying right or wrong it`s just the way things have gotten.  And insurance co.s aren`t in the charity business.

If obummerCare continues,  even the Canucks won't have an alternative to their failed single payer system.   They've been coming to the US for serious health care.

Re: Why medical bills are so high?

Procedures aren't cheap either? Why are the actual procedures more expensive now than 20-30 years ago. Filling a tooth or pulling a tooth has gotten more difficult? I'm sure things like braces and root canals have changed and even x-rays aren't used so that those things may have gotten more expensive because of advanced technology but basic dentistry hasn't really changed much. Inflation has caused most of the increase, that and the fact that they can and the cost of the "help" has gotten more expesive and wages have risen AND the fact that INSURANCE companies hate to pay out more than you hate liberals so they have raised their premiums to make sure they continue their profit levels.

Re: Why medical bills are so high?

So, if you could, would you not try to find a cheaper way to get quality work done? A US trained dentist in Mexico would look at that tooth and send you to an Endodontist who would turn on his computer driven "xray" machine and take some pictures, get out the drill and do the procedure and put in the anchor for the crown and charge you $300. Then you would go back to your dentist's office where he would do a second impression, make a temp crown and a few days later fit the new crown and charge you $325. You get a trip to Mexico, get quality work done, have some really good Mexican food maybe buy some painted pots or some other goods and go back home. My dentist even runs a shuttle from Phoenix to Algodones, ME that cost $40 round trip. You don't pay top dollar if you can get the same quality for less in your business do you? I am sure just by looking at the license plates and bumper stickers in the huge parking lot on the US side of the border that not all of these folks are liberals either.
