Re: Why psychopaths are more successful.
Sometimes, a lot of what it takes to truly make boatloads of money, is a certain amount of ruthlessness, and concern only for one's own self or profit.
Note, I said what it takes to 'make money', not necessarily to 'be a success'.
The ruthlessness can be taken too far, to the point of ruination of others, and/or violation of the law. To be so consumed by the desire of wealth, that you trample on others, is not any measure of success, in my opinion.

That's what you get when you drive moralty from a society. Survival of the fittest, Darwin at work. They view it as nothing wrong because it is the law of nature.

BTW also, not wanting to unfairly speak ill of the departed. If Eugene did anything outright dishonest I'm not aware of it.
He just had the capacity to steamroll over everyone else without the slightest heed and perhaps I'm too harsh in my judgement. But I kinda see that as a related sort of trait.
He was really one of a kind. A well known ag econ professor at Purdue had a history with Gene and told the story that around 1976 Gene had amassed about 4,000 acres (bought well, and would have been fine, and very rich, had he quit there) and the prof suggested that perhaps it was time to stop and consolidate and then make another move in a few years when he'd gotten really efficient at what he had (he was probably 30ish then). He said that Gene told him, "yeah, but that wouldn't be any fun."

Re: Why psychopaths are more successful.
The good news on that, I guess, is related to my theory about people with "go" genes and those without. Had he stopped and consolidated then, and then started buying again in the early 80s he'd probably own about 50,000 acres today.
We're all somewhat captive to who we are and nobody has a perfect crystal ball.
Although personalities like that are sure to make a splash anywhere they go. His very unusual personality, and skills and the chance that he happened to start farming and buying ground at the perfect time and he probably became captive to his own story.

Re: Why psychopaths are more successful.
What is interesting, is that there will be generally two groups knocking at the door of the widow.
One group will ask, 'Can I help?'
The other will ask 'Who's gonna farm the West Quarter?'
I have seen, where widows were so distraught about their future finances, that they just rented to the first person who asked, when they dangled a deposit check in front of them. I consider that very low brow behavior.
I told my wife, to give first chance to whoever helps her out the most, if something were to happen to me.
