Re: algore fesses up

I've had it about up to my ear lobes about the burning food for fuel whining!!

Ever hear of DDG's??  All that corn is not burned for fuel - just the starch.  Protein is left for animal feed.

Remember when corn was around $2.00 and the only net income I had was from the government "welfare" checks? -- they call that a stimulus payment now!!  So we came up with a way to decrease the oversupply of corn and reduce the dependence on foreign oil at the same time -- ethanol.  No more counter cyclical payments.  Only have the direct payments now, which the government likes -- so they can hold that over our head dictating how we farm.

Ever see the agriculture department budget? About 73% of it is for "Nutritional programs" -- can you say food stamps, free cheese and WIC?  Something like 9% goes to farm programs, 12% or so to conservation.

Thomas Jefferson never intended the federal government to be our nanny state -- cradle to grave......  We can survive without government farm payments if you can pay for your own health care.  The biggest subsidy ever invented was employer provided health insurance (i.e. before taxes)!!

Does that also mean that everything from an employer as a benefit of employment is a "subsidy"?  Like a sign on bonus, company car, Christmas ham, etc?

Out of every bushel of corn sent to an ethanol plant we get nearly 3 gallon of fuel plus 18 lbs/feed. It is a way to add value to a raw product and a way to turn sun light into usable energy. It creates American jobs plus helps to lower the price of fuel. There is still more cost in the transportation of food than there is in the raw products it is made from.

Re: algore fesses up

Yes, but the Christmas ham can be dropped when the emplyee is not preforming up to standards or if the company isn't making money.  Just pay the emplyee more salary which would help the federal government (taxed Income) and the employee can decide if he wants to spend HIS money on groceries, big screen TV's, cell phones or health insurance.

Re: algore fesses up

be careful it is now known it takes 1.1 gallons of water to produce one gallon of ethanol so it does destroy the food supply-and we are trying now to get vehicles to run due to excessie water in ethanol so the true cost of this waste is still to be known

Re: algore fesses up

In our capitalistic country, many times for many jobs, the employer has to provide something other than salary to attract the best people for the job.  Take it up with the repubs best benefactors -- big corps!

Re: algore fesses up

You are so off the mark Mollie.  Give up before you have egg all over your face.

Re: algore fesses up

So those evil "big corps" only offer health insurance to attract "best people for the job."  I thought everyone in the shop could get insurance paid by their employer whether they were productive or not.  Love those unions......

Shouldn't the employers pay for house/apt. rent or house payments pretax also???  Why stop there; include gift cards for gas, shoes, cell phones, on and on.

The big difference is "big corps" or even small businesses can decide what benifits they want to give those "best people for the job."  In the case of health care (i.e. insurance), the former congress seems to think it has to be mandated by our government.
