I have a friend that has a daughter teaching in a catholic schools. Of course she is under paid and financially struggling. She says " but dad I love my job!" Dad says what the hell does liking your job have to do with it? You aren't being paid enough to live on.

I am not Catholic, my wife and kids are. I can see your point, and it exemplifies what is wrong with education in this country, it is not about the kids it is about the money, and that is all public school teachers and public school supporters think about.
I mean . . . at a religious school, your kids would not be able to wear those dumb ass name brand clothes, would not be able to cry to mommy and daddy that the teacher is abusing them, or give them a grade that would make the eligible for more important things like track or football.
The problem is that mental discipline starts early in life, and tends to follow a person throughout their lives. I will compare the incarceration rate of those who go to public schools (many never graduate) as opposed to those who go to private or religious schools.
You are right about the extra curricular activities . . . I mean . . . maybe these religious school students will not be sitting in a sports bar every weekend wasting their lives. I feel really sorry that little Johnny will not have sports and other activities taking priority over core courses such as math or languages in school. Whether you realize it or not, school is where you go to learn something so you do not have to live with mom and dad when you grow up. I mean we sure would not want to give anyone an F in a course would we, it might cause mental trauma, and destroy faux self worth which only comes with success in mastering a subject.
We have a group of teachers in our public school system in Iowa that were dumbed down when they were in school and pass that trait on to their public school pupils, and whine when they only get paid $50K for nine months work.
The religious school teachers may indeed be underpaid, but they will never be knocked out, argued with, or threatened by a students parent or shot by a student . . . they will never have to socialize with those parents who believe that little Johnny is being abused by the decision of the teacher or administrator. I mean . . . we know in public schools teachers are whipping boys, that is not the case where one pays for the privilege of having a seat in place where education takes priority, and parents can go suck an orange!
You see in religious schools the teachers have the authority . . . not the dumb ass parents . . . who have actually believes teachers exist to be abused and is responsible for educating the the imbecile they chose to bring into this world.
School is not where one goes to play where extracurricular activities should take priority, it is where one goes to learn . . . and that is what is wrong with education in Iowa. We care more about the welfare of our teachers and those teachers who hide out in our "institutions" of higher learning than we do about teaching students skills.
As far as religious schools not having great athletic teams, you will find that through their scholarship programs, they attract the best athletes to their teams. Perhaps that is why Dowling in Iowa is usually among the top five football teams in Iowa.
I find it refreshing, that some people who teach in these religious or private schools believe their mission is more important than the money. I never me a person worth a dam who did something for the money. Successful people usually do what they like doing. Adios Amigo. John
