coping with winter blahs

What are some ways farmers handle the winter chores and the doldrums? Chores slow down in the winter. Often times, the 'blahs' set in. What can we do to avoid this? What chores do you do in the winter that you have no time for during growing season?

Starting an argument in the Ag forum is always a good diversion.

There`s always alot of fixin` to do.  Figger taxes and spend money before the end of the year, that`s always fun.  I`m one of those that needs alot of Sunlight to keep from getting depressed, so like my Norwegian ancestors said "there`s no bad weather only bad clothes".

Seriously.... I use the winter to donate blood to local Blood Bank as that is the time of year when their supply is the lowest.   I usually give platelets and plasma with two needles, one in each arm about every other week.  I am close to the Five Gallon level now.   It is a great gift to give someone who needs it, and it does not reach into my billfold. (other than for my gas to get to Des Moines)

Re: coping with winter blahs

I like to dabble in work working during the cold winter months.  I've made a couple of entertainment centers, a raised panel desk, book shelves, several types of cabinets, a knife block along with several other items of which many were pieces made for my wood shop.  Time to build a new entertainment center since these new larger flat screen TVs don't fit in the old entertainment center.   I'm guessing there must be millions of old entertainment centers out there that are now obsolete.

Re: coping with winter blahs

I like to play cabinet maker also Dag,  the neatest enertainment center designs I've seen for flat screen have a rack system were the tv drops straight down into the cabinet.  The hardware is pretty pricey.  The cabinet looks like you basic credenza when the tv is put away.

There is just no replacement for the sun, which I don't expect to see again till April.
