got sheep?

A German engineer who's working on a large solar project told me that in his country's extensive solar fields, mowing and maintenance under the arrays was a considerable expense.

But then they learned they can just fence them and lease it for grazing sheep. Goats don't work because they chew on stuff and like to climb.

A sloped south facing pasture makes a perfect site for a solar farm- no cropland out of production and still pretty good grazing to be gotten.

BTW, he said that he was bidding a large project here at 4.5c/KwH.

The future is now although the US didn't have to be behind the Germans and Chinese.

Solyndra!!!! Solyndra* I tell you!!!!!

Somehting less that what DoE blew on the next generation ethanol fable (pickin' them winners!)

No, and in the past your country was an innovator but unfortunately your system selected a 'leader' who wants to go back to burning coal and refuses to accept science to explain things like global warming and how the universe unfolded.

Not a path to the future but rather a path to going back.

Re: got sheep?

BTW using sheep for grass and weed control is not new. It has been done for many years in many places.

Re: got sheep?

Of course.

Just pointing out that the concerns about land use for solar installations are overblown.

In some of the most promising places for solar- in the SW- about 2 sheep could handle the whole job, although they might get lonely.

Might displace some of those Bundy cows, though.

Re: got sheep?

Actually, down there a solar farm of the largest scale would only displace approximately one Bundy cow,

And, things are happening.

If anybody happens to have a nice south sloping pasture near a major transmission like they might consider putting out some feelers.
