great read

And a positive paradigm for the future.

China builds out Eurasia in a post oil, high tech fashion.

The war is economic and the only risk to the US is getting left behind in an oil, car and sprawl  dependent buggywhip economy.

As far as competing directly, well, the asset that has served us well- a remote location- makes it difficult. We aren't attached to Eurasia.

So let's go about being a happy Republic- build out renewables, a new transportation system and the grid, put people to work and start investing in elevating the wellbeing of the vast number of our citizens whose skills and character have eroded.

Make jobs and work to eat, it has a marvelously salutary effect.

One requirement would be delivering the news to our post-war allies- Europe, Japan, Israel that we're beating a retreat over the next decade and they need to work out their own place in the new order.

The post WWII paradigm of the US enforcing a global mercantilist order is long in the tooth.

The advantage that is afforded to a sovereignty that is relatively unburdened geographically and is the holder of a reserve currency. Unless it's political objective is to preserve plutocrats and rentiers at the expense of it's greater citizenry.

Or fail bravely, with a chance vs. fail certainly, but slowly.

Re: great read

I'm in agreement with the majority here that things are pretty bad. The bottom half or so of the black population and roughly the bottom quarter of whites (a larger absolute number) have or are falling into a permanent subclass.

.1%ers can fly their copters over it to their gated communities, the rest of us have to contend with it to some greater degree (moderate here, probably light in most of the upper midwest).

Mere income redistribution isn't going to help, nor is maintaining the punitive legal gulag- that only gets worse, too.

"They" need jobs that pay a living wage and offer some hope and they need access to a public health option that doesn't either bankrupt them or make employing them unreasonable. They also probably need substance assistance as needed and some other trgeted social services.

The only way to get there is fiscal in nature- we're going to have to spend public money. And while, as Keynes noted, you could give them shovels and pay them to go on a great treasure hunt, we might as well get something for the investment.

Best investment is a 21st century infrastructure. We could do it via the Reagan/Bush tactic of armaments spending but I think we're pretty tired of that and there's relatively little social utility to an F35 once you've built it.

A lot of vested interests to overcome though. Even though a great deal of opportunity for the entreprenuerial class it isn't going to fall right in the laps of the folks who are used to being coddled.

1 $T of spending with a 2.5 multiplier is $2.5T of GDP.  Pick up 20% in revenue (FICA hits all the way down and a lot of it trickles up anyway) and save a couple hundred billion on social spending and the net cost isn't bad.

Or, we can do some of thst expansionary austerity, get tough on Those People and buy more guns.

OK Nox, just how much public spending do you and the enron advisor want? We have added 8 trillion to our national debt since Barack Obama assumed the reins. When is it time to try something different than more of the same?

Re: great read

Nox sounds like Mitt Romney up to the point when he drops the ball and thinks that more public spending is the answer. But at least he has recognized that there is a problem....that is one of the first steps.

Guys like Nox should be given a gift subscription to the National Review.....it would probably turn them in the "right" direction when they find out where the really smart guys write.

Re: great read

I wonder if you've given any thought to what monetary policy you'll employ when you establish your County Republic.

You've got a fair accumulation of the white demographic that has fallen out of the bottom around you. When you and the other burghers are running things it'll be harder to blame their problems on blacks and liberals.

Just something to think about.
