Re: how can such smart people be so stupid
Possession of high intelligence alone is probably an overrated virtue (gift?). Just because someone can retain and process new information at much higher rates than ordinary mortal men or women does not make them invulnerable to their own narration biases. Most folks tend to believe what they want to believe. They overweight evidence or opinions which support their original convictions while discounting or ignoring contrarian thoughts. That is narration bias.
Then, there is also the success paradox where people who are really good at one thing, begin to assume that they are also really good at all things. Consider NBA all-star and billionaire, Lebron James. Now try to imagine James offering serious legal or medical counsel to someone and you can begin see some potential problems with whatever Mr. James might say.
How does all of this apply to Secretary of Treasury Janet Yellen? It just means that President Biden might like to have a few differing economic opinions in the room before he decides to write any checks relating to price caps and price controls...whether it be about Russia or otherwise. Sometimes really bright, experienced, and balanced people can get things really, really wrong, despite their best efforts to do their best. That is life in a nutshell.

Re: how can such smart people be so stupid
how have their smart plans for bankrupting Russia gone so far?
they can not see how many ways this idiocy can backfire on them? If russia's oil is significantly cheaper why would any buyer purchase it elsewhere? If russia says no and its oil comes off the market what does that do to the price you're going to pay at the pump? Russia is like 25% of the worldwide supply. The only outcome that is non negative is that somehow every oil producer accepts the lower price. How likely is that?

Re: how can such smart people be so stupid
It's almost like this is what you'd do if you were trying to cripple Germany/EU who is energy poor but has been taking advantage of America and its tax payers.
And a President, even a senile one would have to pass all these moves through multiple channels. And a senile one would be more easily manipulated by these advisors.
When have you seen an American administration put the screws to the EU like "Biden"?
When did Obama ever go to war with the EU?
Paris accord anyone? Who took it in the shorts then? It wasn't the EU.

Re: how can such smart people be so stupid
Market supply/demand forces are likely much stronger than Yellen gives credit. Outside of demand destruction, the only reasonable scenario where a price control action might actually work is through significantly increased supply. Energy demand is generally inelastic, and outside of some "forced" destruction, would take a long time to accomplish without adverse economic and social consequences, as we've seen. It seems like the economic advisors have gone back to the philosophies of those who advised Nixon and Carter, obviously coupled with Green New Deal and New World Order philosophies. They need to figure out how to work with the market forces instead of against them.

Re: Sam, the real question is, ...
... how can people like you be so stupid?
I took a short trip this morning to look at a combine header, traveled over 60 miles round trip, and it cost me less than 50 cents for the fuel.
And you what else, that energy came directly from the sun yesterday via a solar panel on my barn, with no oil industry excess profits included.
