"Porn is what the end of the world looks like"
http://www.truthdig.com/report/item/pornography_is_what_the_end_of_the_world_looks_like_20150215
From the lapsed preacher turned war correspondent.
Can't deny that I was curious but as a matter of principle refused to read Fifty Shades or see the movie, but I've read enough critique to know the plot. Basiclly, every innocent girl should be happy to be a submissive **bleep** if her master is a billionaire with a private jet. I doubt that making the major male character a meth addicted biker would have been nearly as appealing to all the soccer moms reading it on their kindles.
I've listened to numerous conversations among college administrators regarding the current "rape crisis" on campuses. All of the ridiculous, politically correct bureaucratic fumbling aside, there is a problem.
They tend to blame alcohol, which I tend to reject. There are physiological limits to alcohol consumption and when I was in college many people hit them on a regular basis. There are some differences, though- back then it was legal at 18 and most drinking occurred in semi-public places- bars or legal parties. Today kids pre-load with half a dozen shots of kiddie liquor and go out. But it doesn't explain it fully to me.
I'm pretty sure it is more about something that administrators have even less control over- the ubiquity of hard core porn that is available to males from a young age and the resulting perversion of their sexuality, along with the female response to male behavior.
That's a piece of modernity where I can completely agree with the impulse to withdraw kids from the culture at large. Unfortunatley I'm not sure you can unless you can restrict internet access for kids and their friends completely. I can't claim to know what about the prevalence of porn viewing is in the secret lives of religious cultural conservatives is but I'm inclined to think that the fact that Utah is said to be the #1 state in that matter is somewhat telling.

Re: "Porn is what the end of the world looks like"
I`m a little surprised that you`re making a post like this, Nox. I thought you were somewhat pleased with the direction that society was headed, with the exception of a couple CSA flag waving hillbillies and Michele Bachmann.
When the snowball of coruption starts rolling downhill, you can not pick and choose the size of the snowball or the path of the snowball or what it rolls over, it has a mind of it`s own. and we have been preached from the left "there are no boundaries...don`t be a thumper!".
With extreme sexuality, it`s like cocaine or meth, there`s a point that the more you get, the more you want and the more and more bizzare it will take to get you off. There is an audience for this "50 Shades" many women are to the point it takes being tied up and being dominated to get off. This really shouldn`t shock anyone, it`s about right on schedule.
After the first camera was invented, you know that the first thought was "Hey let`s take pictures of naked women"...well that would be my first thought anyway 🙂 Back in the 70`s porn was those XXX mini cinemas and stage party 8mm reel films. Then in the 80`s with VCRs, the first thing in kid`s minds when the folks were away for a couple days "hey let`s rent some dirty movies"...that was my first thought anyway 🙂
But now we see these huge warehouses like "Lions Den" or "Pure Pleasure" just selling tons of videos and toys, some pretty nasty toys...so I`ve been told It`s the natural progression of a dying society...bread and circuses. I guess that now even those that have the word "Thumper" in their vocabulary are starting to see it.

Re: When prejudice and hate meet fact
Another study
As the study's author notes, the differences between states is small and the Utah finding probably is a result of a large youth population.

Larry Flynn and all those porno kings contribute BIG to Democrats. But, with these ranking "Red states" in porn viewership, I`ll say this "Obama recieved votes from every state in the union, no matter how Red the state was..Utah...Alabama, ect".

I think it likely the harvard professor went fishing and found what he wanted. Its a testament to the honesty of utes if they pay for something so ubiquitously free.

For a progressive society to grow all morality must be driven out. Deviancy then becomes the norm. Anyone who questions the deviancy is then labeled hater.

Re: When prejudice and hate meet fact
Historically there's probably no group that was less tolerant on those matters than old yankee republicans.
That's why I don't contribute money to several of the liberal content aggregators where I sometimes find interesting political essays- on account of some of the "sex writing" that I usually find frivolous and sometimes offensive. Although part of it is about driving traffic, I'm sure (no excuse, just fact) as 20 years ago in the checkout line I'd note subheads on Ladies Home Journal like "57 New Oral Sex Tricks." which I have to say provoked some curiosity but not enough to shell out 3.50.
Plenty of money going to both sides from that "industry" although a fair amount is not transparent as it is funded by providers looking to kill net neutrality so as to make more on that particularly large segment of web traffic. Curiously I haven't seen much effort on the part of cultural conservatives to curb porn traffic, even as some fret over contraception.
There is room for discussion of human sexuality but mostly for the purpose of making it less mysterious, pressing and important. It is an essential human appetite but we don't go to bars to watch waiters pull the covers off a nice leg of lamb (actually come to think of it there is a rise of food porn among the elite.)
But as Hedges notes, most porn content isn't even much about sex unless you count masturbation. It's about actresses who are altered into an ideal objectified form and male actors who act out domination over them (also not representative of the average human form). Mentally healthy and mature adults can probably handle that to a degree- although I don;t see why they'd need to. But I think it often has pernicious effects on young viewers.
IT seems like feminists have a tightrope to walk as well. On the one hand they've been the ost vocal critics of porn and on the other some seem to go completely over the top on matters of female sexuality. It's as Marge Simpson observed about another piece of soft porn that got slipped into popular culture "Sex and the City is that show about 4 hot young chicks who behave like gay men."
Anyway, if there's anyting going on in our culture that I feel I ought to try to speak to but don;'t know how to it is the crisis of young men. On average they're falling behind their female counterparts and in a lot of cases they're retreating into a world of video games and porn as a way of not competing (the extreme cases become shooters). Somehow there has to be a way to help them understand that despite the lingering cultural beleif that they shouldn't have to compete with half the folks out there, they can actually be productive, find good wives and be good husbands and fathers.
