"High-end restaurants are packed."

Fastfood chains typically do lunch break business.  The real indicator would be grocery sales.  This is much more ubiquitous and should not experience that fluctuations McDonalds would do to competition.

If grocery sales are down substantially then this more than likely will have an indirect impact on the stock market and economy in general -- as people are only going to cut back on food so much.

Re: this guy gets it

How are grocery sales going to go down when half the population is receiving food stamps?

Ah, hello? Food stamps buy groceries? What planet do you live on man? Just as the unemployment argument is silly and out of wack, people will buy when they have money, and that money goes back into the economy, but we know why you don't want the economy to improve, don't we??

Food stamps don't buy food? What are they used for then, other than pot in states where it is legal.
