What happened to the free cheese give away?

Re: Food Stamp Recipients at Record 41.8 Million Americans

Yep, that's what happens.

When the Eisenhower administration thought up a better way to give welfare to farmers- create demand for high income multiplier products like meat, they probably couldn't imagine where it would lead.

50 times more people on the stamp receiving side.

50 times fewer farmers being supported by the welfare program.

The more government you have the more poor you will have. Socialism is a failure. Why pull the cart when you know all you hve to do is ride?

I guess that is why there are so many poor farmers?

Sounds like an entry for the Sandy Greiner Let Them Eat Cake Award.

Nox, after the election I hope you are on the phone with your reps demanding an end to the farm program, I will be. If you can't find the numbers let me know, I will post them for you. It only takes about two minutes to let them know what you think.

Re: Food Stamp Recipients at Record 41.8 Million Americans

The reason all farmers are wealthy is in the 80`s there was a culling out of the poor ones. 6-8 pages of farm sales in the Rochester Agri News week after week eliminated the "problems". Those of us left are tricky, had inheritances  and are seemly impervious to risk. However, we`re all a couple limit down days in the markets to being in deep shinola. Today if land values dropped in half, most farmers would get their clocks cleaned. People on food stamps wouldn`t be there if the good manufacturing jobs were still here. Now they have to work 3 part time jobs and still go behind. Ross Perot said this would happen way back in the 90`s.

Re: Food Stamp Recipients at Record 41.8 Million Americans

Hi BA,

I actually agree with everything you wrote.

Klinefelter at A&M says a 20% drop in land prices would substantially cramp ag lenders and given anecdotal evidence like Bruce's recent "what the heck" post leads me to believe that is true. Not that everyone would be hurting but enough would that the banks would have to start pulling it in- and that tends to be come self-reinforcing.

On Perot, NAFTA, etc., I was pondering a post to explore how I was wrong on that but there isn't a suitable forum- there are about 2 regulars here would engage in a useful discussion as opposed to using it as an opportunity to take shots from behind ideological walls.

FWIW, the basis of the modern "efficient" operation is much more fragile than one might imagine- it isn't exactly apples to apples but dairy and hog experiences are examples- many operations have been saved only by being too big to fail. If little guys posted numbers like that they'd be gone in a heartbeat.

Which is essentially where we are in banking, commercial real estate, etc. The system needs to save the players with the biggest piles of chips in order to save itself.

fwiw, h

"The more government you have the more poor you will have."

Not sure I'm buying that, Sir.

I could show you any number of third world nations  where "government" is minmal, where poverty is the norm.

government can surely be "overdone", and it can also be "underdone" .  In most cases, it merely responds to provide the services that are demanded, and that the citizens are able to pay for.       KenJ
