I don't know.
While Abe himself seemed to be straight-arrow, his nomination was surrounded by rumors of all sorts of shady dealings. If I remember right, he didn't actually have the nomination, but the Republicans were so determined to free the slaves, that they wheeled and dealed, until they got Lincoln on the ballot, mainly for the single issue of his views on slavery and slave ownership.
