veterans benefits

Was checking on some things in my memory and was more or less correct that in periods after the Revolutionary and Civil Wars pensions and other benefits for veterans exceeded 1/3rd of the Federal budget.

WWII is the thrid great war in terms of men under arms and social importance and while we never got close to that percentage of spending, certainly we made a huge commitment to standing institutions for veterans support.

And since we've been in more or less a state of war ever since, that is ongoing.

Not an argument that we don't have an obligation to keep, merely a reminder of the costs of empire.
