Looking for an acreage-anxious to return to the farm life!

I'm not sure where the most appropriate place for me to post this. . .

My husband, infant son and I are tired of being city apartment dwellers and are looking for an acreage to call our own!  We currently live in Des Moines and have been searching (for about two and a half years) for an acreage in the Des Moines area.  I grew up on a farm and dearly miss it.  We really like the Norwalk area, but are open to other areas with decent proximity to the city.

We dream of having a large garden, chickens, bees, and possibly a few goats.  Our preference would be to find an existing homestead, but are becoming more open to the idea of building a house on an existing building site.  I also have a soft spot for old barns, so if we found a place with one I would be thrilled.

I know a lot of people are looking for something similar these days, so our search hasn't been easy.  If anyone has something they know of or are thinking about selling, let me know!  I'd really love to hear about it!

Thank you so much,

Jessica

Re: Looking for an acreage-anxious to return to the farm life!

Have you tried a realtor?

It may be that you could buy a homestead from someone buying a farm.  many don't want the buildings and will sell them and a few acres off, especially if it is hilly or rough country.  That would require you to be scouting farms and trying to figure out how to contact buyers to see if the buyer would work with you.  I'm not sure how you'd go about doing that.

You might advertise.

The major problem is it's going to cost big money, especially if it'w wiithin commuting distance of DM.
