Re: Distance to pasture
Oh yes Neb, I've got vivid memories of those middle of the night calf pulling moments. All of my grass has new (less than 10 years old) 5 wire fence around it. Not saying this is always 100% reliable, but every cattle man knows the value of nice fences. At one time we calved out 250-300 cows and another 50-100 first calf heifers. This was on top of fattening between 500-1000 steers and heifers. Thanks for your heads up, but I know exactly what I'm getting into. I have no desire to have the numbers my folks had, just a small herd that I can call my own.

Re: Distance to pasture
Don't let Bikini boy burst your bubble. His cost for things like pond building are nearly double what you will pay if you pay for the work out of your own pocket. Three times I have looked into getting equip money all three projects were nearly or more that double the price because government agencies are involved. We had a pond cleaned out and fixed for $1200 once. My neighbor built his pond for about $5000. Another guy down the road built similar pond with same contractor $18000. Big difference was soil and water only approved building it in a location that required moving tremendous amounts of dirt. This same contractor used to ask when I called if we were dealing with any third parties before he would even come out to look at my project.
