Saving the planet with cows

try again, having gotten no takers before.

Allan Savory: How to fight desertification and reverse climate change | TED Talk

Feeding Cattle Seaweed Reduces Their Greenhouse Gas Emissions 82 Percent | UC Davis

A substantial portion of the planet's land area is arid to semi-arid grassland which is largely unfit for agriculture except for low intensity grazing. Even in some Ecotopia that is never going to actually happen, something grazing on it in some more sustainable manner is preferable to turning it sterile. Might as well be something people can eat and make a living off of.

Much of it is somewhat to highly degraded from incorrect grazing management but that can be reversed in most cases. Critics say Savory greatly overstates the positive environmental impact potential and I won't argue with that. But there is still great room for improvement.

Of course you would have to change the political/cultural factors involved with current practices and that is always a challenge- as much so with Americans in cowboy hats as with Masai and Mongolians. The political settlements that ended the range wars are an artificial construct and can be changed no matter how much people will defend them as "their way of life." Hopefully they can be altered in a manner that is utimately to the net benefit of those who hold grazing rights- whether they like it or not. And potentially some marginal crop land can be returned to grass.

Second part- thus far the trials with the seaweed feed additive look very promising- both in terms of methane reduction and no significant performance issues.

Conclusion- grass fed beef and lamb might end up being the most sustainable meat.

Re: Saving the planet with cows

You can't get a lot cheaper than almost free, but the amount collected from grazing fees on 229M acres of public land last year was negligible. Actually a net -$100M last year after administration costs.

You can actually afford to pay people to run the cows if they do it in the manner that you prescribe, and pay for improvements like water and fence that make it practical.

As far as the potential lost grain demand if beef and lamb was almost universally grass fed- zero to positive if enough sensitive and marginal crop land is moved into grass.

Re: Saving the planet with cows

Don't think it is a big greenhouse problem but small engines are a very big environmental problem.

Electric mowers are advancing rapidly.
