Water to Cattle (Ideas Needed)

Had a big storm last night that knocked the power out. Electric company is estimating between 24-48 hours before it is back.

Currently trying to think of a way to get water to cattle in corrals. The corrals have automatic waterers that will not refill without electricity. An empty water tank in the corrals has about 2” of water in it. When they drink that they are thirsty.

It is way to muddy to get a trailer back to the corrals today. We cannot release the cattle to pasture because the pasture surrounding the corrals currently has fence down.

The only way we have to access the corrals right now is if our RTV or a loader can get back there. We normally haul water with a tote, but all of our tote’s are currently full with liquid feed and I believe that it is too muddy to haul a tote back there right now even if we had an empty one.

More rain is forecasted for today.

So, what are your recommendations?

If your totes are full, I`d buy a 1,000 plastic tank and put it on a hay rack, pull it to the corral with a tractor.  Then use hoses or 5 gal pails to fill their troughs.  If it`s really muddy just put a couple hundred gallon in at a trip.   Or you could buy or rent a generator to run your well pump.

Re: Water to Cattle (Ideas Needed)

Thank you for the recommendation.

My dad ended up digging up our well water line and temporarily converting the cattle from our well water to city water by running a water hose between a value on city water to a newly installed valve on our well water line.

Thank you again for the recommendation; I believe you came up with a good idea and viable solution.

Thanks.

Re: Water to Cattle (Ideas Needed)

I`m happy for you.  Those cows can really blow their horns when they want something  🙂    But yeah, if you have access to rural or city water and can use hoses that`s the way to go.   But buying extra hose and such is a good idea, never know when lights are out for maybe a week or more in a bad storm in the future.
