At the macro or large scale level, field monitoring may be useful to learn crop trends.  Maybeb it will help you marketing.  Whether it helps you make the day to day decisions to apply fertilizer or pesticide is not clear to me.  I don't think the satelliltes can see bugs or lesions until it is too late to treat them.  

One paper points out that in an undeveloped country it may help decide to apply nitrogen fertilizer.  In a country where agriculture is devleoped, I think the individual farmer can make that decision more rationally.

It may help tell you what happened in the big picture, like how was China's corn crop, but I don't think it will help you decide to apply fungicide to soybean rust in Brazil.
