iPad question

I my iPad recently is not functioning properly. The sound only works without the headset. When I plug the headset in, it not only does not produce sound, when I unplug the headset, it freezes the video player. Does anyone know the cause and how to fix it? Is it a virus? I did not know an Apple product could be affected by a virus.
