Re: 2010 Yield Results
Well, after the dust has settled, what I thought was a poor corn crop turned out to be just that. I averaged 106 bushels per acre. This is way below my average in 2009 of 141 bushels per acre. Excessive June and July heat along with well below normal rainfall when we needed it most caused these low yields. I have heard of dryland yields in my area ranging from 75 bushels per acre on poor hills to 160 bushels per acre in good bottom land. Areawide, I would feel safe saying that a good average dryland corn yield would be about 120 bushels per acre.
The sad part is, the corn is going to be a lot better by our standards than the soybeans. Some of the guys around here have begun to harvest some of their late group 3's and early 4's. I have heard yields ranging from 7 bushels per acre to near 40, depending on the rainfall.
A few cotton pickers have started to roll as well. None of the gins have cranked up yet, so accurate yields are not available. However, if turnout is anything close to normal, I am hearing a lot of local guys say that they are acticipating yields from 600-1000 lbs. In my opinion, most of it will be in the 650-850 range. Cotton yields are also depending on rainfall and location.
So, in my honest opinion, I don't expect a bumper crop on anything in the Mid-South in 2010. We are all just hoping we can pay up and try again in 2011.

Re: 2010 Yield Results
hey Adam Your yields are about like ours in west Ky.I'm going to average a round 100 but we had close to 10% failed due to May 1-2 flood. So if you do the 10% acres lost in my equasion we are around 90.Last year averaged just over 200.The beans here are just starting only one report west of here 400 acre at 26 these were in the 80's last year. Now if I may ask do you guys grow any wheat and how dry is it there. We wil have problems here if it does not rain soon, some are working ground in prep. for wheat and some are waiting for rain.

Re: 2010 Yield Results
hello noxie - In talking to a couple of guys to the south of me NESD - Milbank area they had cut 6 fields of corn for silage and they say it was adjusted at between 199 - 248 so those are pretty big yields have heard the big dairy by Morris MN was cutting same type crop never talked to anybody from there. I have talked to a guy in western Richland Co. ND that thinks he has a very good corn crop in the field, some of the boys in Ottertail Co. MN and Big Stone Co. think the same. I have been down I29 to Souix Fall and back up hwy 75 and there is some very nice corn and beans out there also went north to Hallock MN and it looks pretty good I know one thing for sure TW will be way up and the dryer bill will be way down. I think it will be a real nice crop but can we get to those numbers not sure I will be real happy if I can find a field that get's to the low end of what I'm being told. But then again I never have the yields my neighbors get so seems like this year will be no differant.
Don't get me wrong it's a nice crop but we are still aways north for those type yields but hopfully.

Re: 2010 Yield Results
The wheat acres here vary greatly with the market trends. I do know that several of the guys around are going to have more wheat than normal due to the recent price spike, including myself. We usually don't start sowing wheat until around October 15th. We are just continuing to pray for rain so we don't have to feed up all our hay before winter gets here, and so we might have adequate moisture to germinate wheat.
It is horribly dry here. Our pastures would easily burn over, and many of our group 5 soybeans are dying prematurely from the excessively dry conditions. My soybeans are all group 5's with the exception of one farm which are 4.8's. Many of mine have a good pod load but with the excessive heat and drought many are 1 and 2 bean pods, and we all know they don't stack up very well.

Re: 2010 Yield Results
Central Ia. 208, 162, 131, 78 and zero(flooded river bottoms). Hearing talk that yields here down 20% from last year. Does northern IA increase 20% to hold the average? Beans yields will start coming soon, but poorer SDS yields should be first to be reported, some beans look good here. Last year we produced a lot of 70+ bushel beans around here. Between flooded bottoms and SDS, the average will be off here. Again, many are talking of NIA being much stronger than last year. Sidedressing would have helped the corn(it made a huge difference where it did get put on), but in our area, there was a 24 hour window to sidedress this year....yes, we had that much rain. Looks like SURE for some around here will stand for SURE THING every year. Haven't ever collected crop insurance(except hail) or sure payment in my life, will this be the year...not a track record I want to break.

Re: 2010 Yield Results
First beans yields (note: these fields had some SDS). 30 bushels less than last years yield for the farm(not same field b/c of rotation). Same soil type and drainage as 09. Central Ia. Going to be a very short harvest here.

Re: 2010 Yield Results
Raining in Chicago Saturday. Anybody harvesting? If so, any yield updates to pass along this weekend?
Thanks,

Re: 2010 Yield Results
I just kicked off corn harvest in my area (Michigan, Indiana line) Thursday. Moisture test in the field showed 23% but the elevator tested it out at 26%. I dont know what kind of yield we were getting because we only took out the headlands and left the rest to dry out. The quality of the corn looked really good but yields wont be a bin buster... too hot and dry here in July! North of my location in central Michigan should have a big corn crop though.
