2010 Yield Results

Just started corn N. of Columbus Oh. Due to 7" of rain the first week of June and causeing a lot of ponding the yeilds are going from 70-240. Had to dribble on the nitrogen because of the hieght of the corn and a lot was lost. So far 80 acres avg about 120. Last year was 185, but that was way about our yearly avg of 140.

In this very small area of NW Ohio we are looking at possibly the best year ever, at least in the top3 since I began farming in 1979.   Some early planted corn looks almost ready.   Beans are 2 weeks away yet.   But if you go 20 or 30 miles in any direction crops look average at best.

New yields from central Illinois:

15% corn harvested on Tuesday. The yields are sporadic, ranging from 120-190. This is disappointing for this area. One field was reading 165 bushels per acre, and just one mile away a farmer harvested corn at 190 bu./acre. The corn is dry and that will make for a smaller grain-drying bill. But, the yields are disappointing, especially when this area was considered the 'garden spot' of the Midwest for much of the growing season. A few farmers have started combining soybeans, but most will be harvested the last week of September and later.

U.S. harvest yield results:

Auburn, IL  246 bushel corn at 16% in Auburn IL (Sangamon Co.)  -  Across the board hearing better yields from everyone this week.

South of Jonesville LA...40-50 bpa, producer pleased.  Says later beans could be even better.

50 miles south of Memphis, mostly Delta land irrigated corn ave. about 180 and 35 bu. less than last yr. and 10 bu less than expected. Producer even had extra Nitrogen applied in late June by airplane. about 1500acres.  Only 200a. of soy cut so far which was dry land. planted in mid April, much better than expected. 60bu./a.

Caldwell County, MO northeast of Kansas City  -  Early corn running 120 bu, disappointed

 SE IA - A local farmer took out 80 acres last week that made 90 bpa. Thats down about 60 bpa vs last yr. This local corn crop is a train wreck..with a few reports of corn yields in the 50-60 bpa area. Best yield report has been 190 on a well drained corn on bean field.

 WC IA – Greene Co – 50 acre bean field with severe SDS made 40, vs 52 ly and 48 aph. Producer thinks other beans should be better than this field. Another producer reporting 60 bpa beans @ 12% mst, 15 in row, about the same yield as 2009 . This field has a touch of SDS in it too.

Traditionally the magic date is sep.25.  However this year it may be later as the beans look pretty green yet.  Yellow leaves have just started appearing in the past week on the earlier varities.

Central Neb – Platte Valley

High moisture corn just getting started.....much lower moisture than expected, some fields already down to 22% moisture. Can't figure out what they were thinking not starting earlier! Harvest is 3 weeks earlier than last year and around 5 points lower in moisture. Yields are similar to last year, (all irrigated) 200-215 on decent ground with poor draining, low ground off 25-40% from last year’s yields.

WC- IL  Galesburg- Knox County

90-100 on poorly drained corn on corn, but  corn on beans stubble 160-170.   A client  just called

reporting that he just opened up cornfield and was getting 206-210 ave.  Highly variable it seems around here.  

Crop Insurance person from Ohio River Valley

Have travelled in the area from SW IN and SE IN – yields have varied substantially, anywhere from 75 bpa to 200+ bpa.  As a general rule, the acreage that averaged 200 bpa last year is coming in at 160-170bpa this year.  However, the corn is much drier, have heard of corn being shelled at 12-13% moisture, out of the field.  Slight losses due to shatter in the corn, that’s why we’ve seen a lot of cornfields with shelled stalks that are 3’ high, trying to get the head as near the corn ear as possible so less “fall” to the head and less shatter.

SW OH – yields have generally been good, comparable or just slightly lower than last year.

The early soybeans are average to above average for these areas, 50-60+ bpa.  Harvest just really getting started in northern parts of IN and OH.   KY corn yields have been very poor (70-100 bpa) in the southern part of the state, better as you work your way north.

What I’ve heard in the central and southern IL region mimics your reports.  Quite a bit of variation, depending on if you received heavy rains throughout the year or not.  One of the ladies in the office at Jacksonville, IL (Morgan county) said that her husband’s short season corn 103 day and shorter, was doing 30-40 bpa less than the fuller season hybrids.        

Have received reports of aflatoxin in corn as far north as Cape Girardeau, MO, but not much higher than that. 

I also saw some diplodia in the corn in central and south central IL, up to 30% in some instances.  Don’t believe at this time it will be a large enough area to be a factor. 

Overall, producers are pretty happy with the yields.  Prices are decent, input costs are lower than a couple of years ago, and have to dry very little of the corn as compared to last year. 

NE Kansas producer

Thought I would follow up on our yield information.  We have shelled about 500A of corn thus far.  Yields on the full season corn are similar to last year, in the 200 bu range.  The disappointment has been the earlier harvested corn.  It is about 10 to 20 bu. less than last year.  Normally most people plant about 10% of their acres to early maturing corns so we can get started with harvest sooner.  The heat seems to have taken some yield from the early maturing corns.

Elevator space is also tight and will only get worse.  Cash across the scales with a wide basis is coming soon.

Our soybeans are still looking great.  Again the newer technology in beans is paying dividends.  They withstood the heat better than normal and look to be a great crop.

Southern IL

I was south of Effingham last night, corn yields were generally running above average……….. some as high as 180.  Replant corn is not expected to be as good………..

Corn on corn --- off 30-40 bu;    corn on stubble  off 10-15 bushels   drying down fast ---nothing like last year’s harvest  hope my farm average doesn’t fall below 20-25 bu lower than  last year..  no beans harvested  yet.

Yield reports are flowing in from everywhere. As a general rule, the word 'disappointing' is used to describe corn yields, and 'happy or good' are used next to soybean yields. That's my take, what's yours?

WC IL:  Sangamon  Co:  246 bushel corn at 16%; Across the board hearing better yields from everyone this week.

NW OH:  Van Wert Co:  Averaging about 175bpa, down about 10bpa from last year.
 
NC NE:  beans - irrigated quarter of 1.9's went 65 bpa.  qrtr was hailed; producer thinks his non-hailed will be better

SC MN:  Blue Earth Co:  Two fields of 1.7 beans came off just west of Mankato, MN yesterday. One of the fields went 60 bu/ac @ 11.1% and the other field went 64 bu/ac @ 11.4%. Farmers were very happy with those yields. Some corn came off yesterday as well. 103 day corn on corn went 209 bpa. 100 day corn following beans went 217bpa. 94 day corn on corn went 207 bpa. Famers are very happy with those yields. Those yields would be about 10-15 bu. better than last year.
 
SE MN:  bean yield - 55 bu/acre on sandy ground - 10 bu better than LY

EC IL:  200 acres finished corn, 197 bpa #2 corn.  This was the best field thins year out of 2000 acres harvested so far.  8 bpa less than last year.
 
WC IA:  Carroll Co:  Spotty yield coming in at 180-200 bushels per acre on rough, hilly ground.  54 pound test weight, 18-21% moisture. Yield close to last year, but test weight disappointing.
 
SC MN:  Faribault Co:  harvesting 210-240 bpa corn.  22% moisture.  Thought to be his better field
 
WC IL:  Sangamon  Co:  corn yields have been 92 and 128 on flat black dirt.  Bean yields over the weekend 61 and 70.  Area generally has some really good dirt, thus good yields.   You would normally hear of the 200 + yields on various fields.  We just are not hearing that this year at all.
 
NE IA:  Howard Co:  1st Beans  64 bu / acre  12.8%
SE MN:  Freeborn Co:  40 acres,1.6 maturity, figured had about 10 % sds, 12% moisture, 55.3 bu/acre

NE IA:  Bremer Co:  started soybeans on Sunday ; 11-12% H2O and yielding 52 bpa no SDS

NE IL:  Iroquois Co:  57 acres – 133 bpa – lower than expected; 60 acres – 129 bpa – very disappointing – both farms last few years were over 175 bpa
 
NW IL:  Stark Co:  80 acres (his best farm) at 125 bpa – a lot of water damage / 200 bpa+ last few years
 
NC IL:  Marshall Co:  153 acres did 190 bpa – was hoping for 200 bpa which is 5-year average
 
NE IA:  Winneshiek Co:  67 corn acres – 215 bu/ac, 56# test weight; 46 corn acres 235 bu/ac dry, 57# test weight. Light ground, needless to say, but.. farmer extremely pleased.
 
NE IA:  Winneshiek Co:  Soybeans - 32 acres – 64.1 bu/ac.; 41 acres – 58 bu/ac across the scale. Field visually had heavy sudden death,  producer very surprised by the final yield.

C IA:  Story Co:  3 fields, good dirt, 155 avg dry, About 1000 acres, Last year 190, Holes from flooding hurt, Black heavy soil doesn’t drain well, Heat probably a factor too
 
C IL:  Macon Co: corn – 90-150 bpa dry, last year 170-185
 
WC IL:  McDonough Co:  first field 85, 2nd field 120, last year 200
 
NC IL:  Cerro Gordo Co:  The first field of beans went 62, about 2 bu less than last year for this producer.

C IA: Poweshiek Co:  One producer has harvested 2 bean fields. Yields are around 55

C IA:  Jasper Co:  corn yields ranging from 60 to 160. Moisture varies from 16.5 to 18.0
 
NW KS:  Sheridan Co:  finished irrigated corn  avg 180 v 220 year ago
 
NW IL:  Warren Co:  170-190 vs 210 last year
 
C IN:  Marion Co:  One farmer has run 350 acres corn so far with yields running from 135 to 185 bu; Better than expected, lots of early season rain damage; 14-18% moisture, 56-58 TW.    This farmer has not run any beans yet but hearing yields of 25-45 bu in his area

NE IA:  Bremer Co:  1st load of corn.. 17.9% 55.7 tw.. no yeilds yet.     1st load of SB ... 12.2%  two guys 60/ acre and 63. they are happy..

OH: Beans great : 60+…… Corn: in good areas that got rain, 200+.   In areas that did not get the rains, where they thought yields were going to be 120, actual yields more like 145-150.
 
SE IN:  Decatur Co:  Customer nearly done with soybeans and averaging about 66bpa, close to their 5-year average. Didn’t plant beans last year

C IA:  Corn running 180 to 200 on the hills.  14 to 16% moisture. 54.5#  Lower ground will be worse this year with all the rain.  220 to 240 last year.

Just finished a 35 acre field of corn; yield was a very depressing 111 bushel an acre. County average is 130 bu. Moisture was 20% and the ears looked good, but heavy rains early in the season drowned out some of the corn. Lack of rain in July took its toll as well. The sad part is just 20 miles north of my farm, the corn looks great, and farmers there should run 150 or better.... What a difference one good thunderstorm in July makes!
