2010 Yield Results

I would like to start a U.S. yield survey. Though unscientific, let's start our own groupsourcing yield survey. I'll ask two simple questions. As the harvest season goes along, I hope to get yield reports and comparisons to last year with this posting. What do you say, help me out, huh? Just give us an idea where you're from and answer two short questions:

1) For your area, what were corn & soybean yields like last year?

2) What are yields like this year?

Here are recent yields (8-26-2010) reported from the Mississippi Delta:

Dryland corn=100-125 bushels per acre

Irrigated corn=150-170. This is disappointing to the local farmers. They should be getting 200-plus, they say. No rain.

Dryland beans=70-plus

Irrigated beans=80-plus. Farmers are very happy with these high yields. Now, they are hurrying to beat the hurricanes.

Thanks and let's have some fun with this. This isn't a time to be a lurker, let's hear from you!!!

Re: 2010 Yield Results

Here are recent yield reports from Illinois:

South of Decatur, IL:

From five fields: 202, 198, 179, 160, and 160 bushels per acre. The average was 180 dry. They expect the rest to get a tad better.

Southeast of Quincy, IL:

No yields but in eight loads of corn, 24% moisture was recorded.

West of Peoria:

24% moisture and 170 bu./acre dry.

Banter, IL (South of Decatur):

170-dry with 24% moisture. This is below expectations for this area.

In Greene Co., IL:

Corn is coming out 20-24% moisture levels with some diplodia damage (ear rot). Last year, this area did 190-230 bu./acre. I was told the early crop may be the diseased-infected. However, the later crop will be the better stuff and could beat last year's record yields.

Outside of Springfield, IL:

142 bu./acre with 45 lb. test weight. This same field was measured by that 'other' crop tour at 200 bu./acre.

Re: 2010 Yield Results

Northeast LA:

This morning, soybean yields much better than expected.  Irrigated avg. 60 and dryland avg. 40.  Last year this was 50 and 25 respectively.  Early rains, then dry but the late rains is what boosted yields.

Near Memphis  TN:

The driest spot on earth, according to the source. Five fields yielded 30 bu./acre in dryland beans, 50 bu irrigated.  About as expected.  50+ miles from Memphis, crops materially better in general but spotty.  "Considering we had the driest, hottest summer in memory, it could have been worse. Overall I’d say about as expecting. Harvest picking up speed quickly.  Rice yields excellent across the board but its early."

From another elevator in Memphis:

Corn yields running from 70 to 190 and aflatoxin an issue.  Early bean yields from 15-35 bpa, well below average.

North of Greencastle, IN (Putnam County):

Corn yielded 223 bu/acre at 23%.
Last year, the field averaged 209 bu/acre. These are some tremendous yields for this particular area and soil type, especially for an 104 day corn.

Re: 2010 Yield Results

South of Springfield, IL:

An 80 acre corn field south of Springfield tested 200 bpa by Crop Tour X was taken off today with a final yield of 142 bpa. More diplodia damage with test weight a very disappointing 45 pounds.

Moweaqua, IL:

40 acres yielded 202 bu./acre, 10-15 below last year. Another one from Mowequa..198 bu./acre.

Clarksdale, MS:

Irrigated corn yield of 120 bu./acre vs. 178 yr ago.

Sturgis, KY:

Corn -- Normally runs anywhere from 220-250. So far this year, 170-180 bu./acre.

Champaign IL:

Corn - 180-200 on the river bottoms, was 250 last year.
Another field did 200 bu./acre this year vs. 230 expected and 250 last year.

Southwest of Lafayette, IN:

Late yesterday, harvested a field that measured 24-25% moisture with a yield average of 210 bu./acre. This was about 10 bu./acre less than what similar farms produced last year.

Irrigated beans in MS:
Greenville, Ms  180 acres, 84 bu
Indianola, Ms 100 acres 78 bu
Inverness, Ms  70 acres 81 bu

50 miles outside of Memphis, Tn.:

Corn yield of 150, 180, and poorer ground yielding 100 bu./acre.  Seven trailers and no alfatoxin trouble but hear neighbors have been turn down at elevator. Yields are a little worse than he expected and a little below ave. Last year, fields recorded 170bu./acre. Meanwhile, soybeans are turning fast.

Re: 2010 Yield Results

I am in Crockett County Tennessee. I have harvested one farm of my corn, which was my earliest planted.  It is all dryland and consists of gently rolling fertile silt loam soil. I recorded an average yield of 111 bushels per acre on this farm with moisture ranging from 15.2% to 18.2%.  This is slightly above a breakeven point on corn in our area.

My soybeans, which probably won't be ready to harvest for at least 3 more weeks, will most likely range in yield from just under 20 bushels per acre to near 40 bushels per acre.  According to area crop consultants and nearby farmers, many acres of soybeans in our area, especially early-planted or early-maturing varieties, will yield likely between 15 and 30 bushels per acre.  These yield numbers are off from nearly a 50 bushel average on dryland soybeans last year.

The unbearable heat and extensive drought have caused detrimental yield loss across all crops in our area.  I personally don't have any cotton this year, but several of my neighbors and area crop consultants are saying that dryland upland cotton will likely yield around 700 lbs. lint per acre on average this season.  Crockett County had a 985 lb. average in 2006 and nearly that number in 2008, nearly all of which was dryland.  For this area, breakeven has historically been at or near 700 lbs.  However, with the rising cost of herbicide inputs, due to widespread glyphosate-resistant palmer amaranth, marestail, and and many other troublemakers on the way, breakeven in 2010 could likely be very close to 750 lbs, or possibly more where multiple applications of costly herbicides were required.

Re: 2010 Yield Results

Mike, we are staring to chop here should have a real good idea of yields here by sunday night actuall yield testing starts next tuesday.  From the few loads we have done looks to be as good as last year only a month earlier.  Kernels have shrunck about 5% in the last week the ends of the kernels look like a prune.  Kernel depth just isn't there. JR

also this weekend we are opening up fields with our self propelled chopper for three guys vary different soil types wo I will get an idea of other yields.  Just visual reports no actuall numbers there as these are others farms. Man I am alreadyu tired and this harvest season is just starting! JR

Re: 2010 Yield Results

awy2,

Sorry to hear of your troubling yields. I will pray for you. Farming is so unpredictable isn't it? I know that is disappointing. I hope you can find a way to  get through this tough year. I want you to know that we appreciate you sharing your story with us. Thanks. Let us know how the soybean harvest is going. Hopefully, your beans will be better than the corn, huh!

Re: 2010 Yield Results

jrsiajdranch,

You're tired from the State Fair. I know, I used to show hogs at the State Fair. It's a lot of work. A lot more than people think. Good luck with the harvest activity. Be safe and let us know how it's going. Thanks JR for sharing. You do a great job posting on our website and people enjoy it. Your numbers show it, great job!

Thank you,

Mike

Re: 2010 Yield Results

REMINDER: As you hear about more yields this week, please take a minute to let us know about it. It looks like this week's weather could be favorable for a lot more southern Corn Belt harvest activity. In fact, I hope to get off the floor this week and get out in the field myself. I'm overdue for a ride in a combine.
