Best Plow for maintaining terraces.

I am looking for a plow to build up some existing terraces. These are just standard "Kansas style terraces" not grass backed, just farmed on contour. I am not real familiar with moldboard plows. So I am wondering on plow share style and size, number of plowshares. Or if there is a better tool to rebuild terraces.

 Thanks In Advance.

Re: Best Plow for maintaining terraces.

Don't know if it's any better or easier, but we used a 3pt mounted back blade for years. We didn't wait until they were to far gone to start repairing them. We would blade them up almost every time the ground was laying fallow. Things are different now, I'm a one man chain gang and something's just don't get completed like they used too. Terrace repairs and manure spreading are just 2 to name a couple.

A oneway doesn't work too bad. Might be hard to come by since scrap metal prices got so high.

Re: Best Plow for maintaining terraces.

I have diversion ditches that kind of create a small terrace effect. When you terrace do you guys move the dirt at the bottom of the field to make it more level. The plow and or blade work for my ditches. But not sure I understand how they work for terrace maintenance.

Re: Best Plow for maintaining terraces.

A 5 bottom 16 inch Oliver semi-mount did a good job for us back in the 60's. Now we use notill and cover to keep the water from ever starting down the hill. Might just be a here thing.

Re: Best Plow for maintaining terraces.

Thanks for replying. I have one other question. Do you pull most of the dirt from the upper side of the terrace out of the channel, or do you pull some from the lower back side of the terrace?

Re: Best Plow for maintaining terraces.

Diddo hank, we did the same and sometimes even bladed some of the terrace channels away from the terrace if we felt we had excess soil. Thinking about getting what few terraces I have left rebuilt. I also no-till now so once I get them back into shape, they should last a very long time.

Re: Best Plow for maintaining terraces.

We  have used a rollover plow for as long as we have had terraces. Some of my terraces are older than i am  and i am 59. just plow the channel side about the width that works for machinery. a rollover works so you never have to drive empty. Plowing the backside will create a dip that could make harvesting beans a problem. We are in the process now of widening ours for bigger machinery.
