Cheaper Corn Seed Next Year

Went to one of those seed corn feeds today and the reps are talking about how well double stack and conventional corn seems to be doing and suggested that if one wants some of this stuff to buy early as it may run out.  Of course, these guysa re selling corn.  What do you think?  Readdy to try a cheaper seed even if you give up some traits?  I might think about it.

Re: Cheaper Corn Seed Next Year

Good question Jim - I almost did this year - I had talked to my seed dealer a lot about it - I had made up my mind I was going to switch back to non GMO - well I was going to keep the Round up gene , then I did some more reserch on the corn numbers - What was I loseing ? I lost ear worm controll , rootworms , you name it , I chickened out and order my same numbers - then this summer I got some calls to spray for corn bore = non GMO - So I guess what you have to ask yourself - how much risk do's Jim want to take to save a buck ? What if you have to spray for corn bore ? the app. here would run you 5.50 to 6 bucks an acre - What about gray leaf ? theres another 22 to 30 bucks for spray and airplane . It go's on and on . What IF you get any problems ?? You may save a buck early but cost you 30 to  save it - OR I should say controll the problem .

So I guess heres what you do - you stand in front of the miror and look real mean and say - Do you feel lucky ? Well Do yeah punk ?  lol   ( That was a good movie )

Good luck

Not non-gmo, but pioneer monsanto, and others offer some double stack corn with corn borer only protection. I have and will use this on my cos ground with insecticide. I was applying insecticide anyway because of occasional rw problems even with rw traits. I'm able to apply force or aztec with my planter or capture with the starter fertilizer on my planter.

Really agggervates me to buy all those stacks and not save a dime.  We still have to spray capture in august for spider mites who just laugh at Bt corn.  Root worms are not often a problem here.  And roundup doesn't kill a couple of our weeds now and we don't use it much on corn anyway.  We buy it as a loss preventative since we all spray glyphosate in our windy world on the dry land acres.

Re: Cheaper Corn Seed Next Year

SW, there is a good chance that i will have rup corn and not spray any rup on it. How financially foolish is that ???

Re: Cheaper Corn Seed Next Year

It feels foolish,  but there is a lot of glyphosate by airplane in our area.

We used to rotate conventional with rup and LL corn to fight volunteer but the braineacks fixed that by making LLrup  and forcing some varieties.

Re: Cheaper Corn Seed Next Year

I wish there was a cheap spray to keep birds away... I just increase the seeding rate so I get smaller ears with less corn poking through.

Anything economical/not annoying?

Vydate works great on squirrels and coons 🙂 Not much of a bird problem here but I keep some poison in my equipment sheds for the birds.
Best way I've found is lay some normal corn out in little piles along a wood line or creek bottom. Let them eat it for a week. Go back with vydate and turn it green after they are used to getting an easy meal. The vultures love me!
It's not a labeled use, and I'm not telling you it's legal. But sure does work on em

Planting non GMO corn on all my acres but 1 farm. Only reason its getting traited corn is its extra corn I ordered from last years dealings...
Have a premium for the non GMO corn and beans as well.
