Corn herbicide question
I was just wondering what some of you are doing for weed control in corn? I always have the local elevator spray a pre-emerge herbicide after planting. This year I had them spray Parallel plus, Basis and a half pint of 2,4,D to kill any weeds that didn't die in the disc pass and used 28% as the carrier. With all of the rain that we have had over the past month, this year is starting to mirror last year. Last year herbicides seemed to either leach or die out early leaving many fields including mine full of giant ragweed by harvest. Do you think I should consider having atrazine sprayed soon as a precaution, try something else, or do nothing and wait and see? Thanks for the input in advance.

Re: Corn herbicide question
I`m a big believer in going totally post with one shot of Halex GT and 1/2 lb Atrazine. Kills everything but corn dead dead dead. One shot when the corn is tall as a pop can and fugetaboutit!

Re: Corn herbicide question
Apparently you must not have planted Glyphosate resistant corn...because virtually the entire country has jumped on that bandwagon. With conventional corn..we have a lot of very effective products to use against Giant Ragweed. The best product is dicamba...or for a lower volatility product..you go with Clarity(or it's generic equal Sterling Blue). There are those that say it makes the stalk more brittle on the corn..but if you can't get the stalk through the header because of all the giant ragweed it won't be much fun either way. Spray it early, or..spray it later with drops..it will clean all the ragweed up. Add a little atrazine if you like..or just find some Marksman or it's generic equivalent. If you have an extremely sensitive area to Clarity volatility...you can go with Buctril/Atrazine..and add just a little atrazine and an ounce of Stinger. It's very good at cleaning up missed Giant Ragweed..and gives you some residual too. Only caution is not to spray it when the leaves on the corn are too wet..it may cause some spotting. I have more escapes with grasses these days than broadleaves..mainly because I grow a lot of popcorn..and can't use Balance on it.....so I end up buying some Accent to have on hand for post grass control.

Re: Corn herbicide question
Yes Pup I have RR corn. My corn is around 6 inches tall and I believe they say corn needs sprayed with both roundup or atrazine before the corn is a foot tall? You say you can apply Clarity later with drops? Do you mean at sidedress time because I will have the elevator dribble 28% on soon?

Re: Corn herbicide question
Label says you can apply 8 oz of Clarity from 8-36 inches tall...with drops. Or 15 days before tassel emergence. As long as soybeans aren't 24 inches tall or flowering downwind of the corn fields.....You know...all the stuff they used to say about Dicamba (Banvel) to warn you that it might blow downwind. Clarity isn't quite as volatile..that's why they developed it. But for giant ragweed...you can't beat it with a stick.

Re: Corn herbicide question
But if your corn can be sprayed and it's less than a foot tall..Glyphosate and Atrazine sounds like a great program. If you want something to really work over giant ragweeds though...Clarity can be sprayed with Atrazine over the top up to about 12" corn I believe, you just might have some leaning corn plants. Later applications with drops lessen the chance of leaning..because you don't get the product in the whorl.

Re: Corn herbicide question
Halex GT is one good program. there is a lot of chemistry there and is a really good product. One thing to mention on here about dicamba, BASF has come out with their safener product Status, excellent crop safety label up to 30 or 36 (don't remember) inches on corn and like stated...dead, dead, dead on any broadleaf out there. The thing with giant ragweed is that it germinates earlier in the season so don't be afraid to start spraying earlier. generally the late emerging weeds are your small seeded broadleaves like waterhemp.
i add 2.5 oz of Status with 22 oz of PowerMax will kill about anything out there. throw in a little attrazine for some extra residual.

Re: Corn herbicide question
Good call on the Status...didn't remember it. It adds a little extra grass control to the dicamba. The safener component of it is for the grass herbicide...I don't think it helps with the dicamba part of it. I'm not sure about the volatility...whether it compares to straight dicamba..or to the modified dicamba in Clarity. Always a good idea to check out the weather for the next couple days when spraying that kind of stuff...

Re: Corn herbicide question
My father in law and I tried some Halex GT for the first time this year. Will never try it again. No residual control on woolly cupgrass.

Re: Corn herbicide question
That's good to know. I was thinking about going with 2,4,D preemerge with 28% as the carrier and come back post emerge with Halex. The problem that I am noticing about atrazine is the leaching in our course soils in wet springs.
