Corn on corn practices

Hey everybody!  We have been shifting to more corn on corn acres every year and I was hoping people could share some corn on corn strategies that have been working well for their operation. I am especially interested in nitrogen/nutrient management(timing and placement), but would appreciate any insight.

Re: Corn on corn practices

all stuff you probably do now. plant lower residue corn hybrids, pay attention to emergence and early growth ratings, some type of starter fert., put part of the N on fall or preplant as nh3 and put  the balance on at sidedress or over the top with liquid n at planting. I'm not equipped to do it, but  putting some N on at planting time with the planter seems to have good results for many.(2x2 application)  In ncia and smn many still fall molboard coc. I have one field that will be molboard plowed this fall for the 7th year in a row.  good luck

Re: Corn on corn practices

I definitely agree with upping your N rate and splitting it into ~3 applications if possible.  Have to get some on through the planter, whatever floats your boat.  Sidedres and possibly getting some out with a pre-emerge herbicide application.  The one thing that I'm curious about is your preferred method of tillage if any on the farm.  How is your base fertility and pH.  I generally tend to bump population slightly on C-C fields if it's heavier soils.  Be looking for good disease packages in your varities.

I'm no expert but they tell me to plant varietie unrelated to the variety planted the previous years. Something about limiting disease exposure with consequitive years of planting the same genetics

Re: Corn on corn practices

Broadcast 30-40# of nitrogen on the stalks in the fall w/your liquid p/k plowdown. Chisel plow the ground in the fall, next spring put another 120# liquid on with herbicide and incorporate, we have a dry starter we put on 30-15-15-20s, then sidedress another30-60# depending on how many years of corn you are looking at. The longer in corn, the more N we throw at it.

Don't forget a foliar fungicide @ tassel. We have seen 20-30 bu increases using fungicide in C-C. Some are looking at using a partial rate of fungicide @ V5-V7 with roundup along with a full rate application @ tassel. I haven't seen enough data or experimented with this as much to make a confident recommendation.

Re: Corn on corn practices

Have a warm spring, on the dry side. Otherwise nitrogen loss is to big of an obstacle. 2007 my best yields were c-on-c. 2008,9 & 10 c-on-c took big yield hits. Big. On second thought, just don't do it.
