Corn pollination problems
Just wrote a brief report based on some information from Emerson Nafziger over in Illinois about some pollination issues he's finding around the state. Sounds like the cool weather lately's not been kind to pollinating plants.
Anybody finding this in your fields? If so, is fairly routing crop scouting uncovering it, or is it taking a closer-than-normal inspection?

Re: Corn pollination problems
I just came in and was going to post on marketing about not counting your chickens before their hatched. SInce I just got back from checking my last planted field. It was planted on May 22, I didn't go out early in the mud like some did in my area. (SE NE) Anyway I checked pollination and was disappointed. The tip of the ear did not pollinated. Even a few kernels that didn't pollenate in the mid section. I'm really surprise since this corn field didn't tassel until after the heat at moved away and we did catch a nice rain on it. The only thing I can think of is it was just to dry early and no sub soil moisture for proper pollen development.
After I walked back to the pickup and collected my thoughts I'm glad I have what I got this year. and better not complain. I'm still looking at better then double what my yield was last year and a few miles away they didn't get that first rain that save my corn crop.

Re: Corn pollination problems
Yeild is going to be hard to guess. Pollination was spotty. Good spots in and terrible in the same field. Patrick
