Corvus, Lumax, Lexar questions

Do any of you have any experience with Corvus, Lumax or Lexar as burndown and pre-emergence corn herbicide in a two-pass program?  Not planning to use 2,4d with any of them because it's been so wet, cold and it's getting late.  Second pass would be glyphosate.

Re: Corvus, Lumax, Lexar questions

Jim, I have used Lumax in the past and it is agreat product. Switched to Halex a couple of years ago..Lumax with 24 oz of Touchdown. I would wait for corn to be a the 2 collar stage and start spraying..killing the weeds that were growing and leaving a nice residual base of Dual and Calisto. Now that glyphosate  prodcuts have dropped in price, you can apply a full rate of Halex for around $15/ac. What I don't have a pre down with 32%, I am going to go over with Halex as soon as the beans are in. Then, I plan on coming back with Touchdown and Quilt when corn is at the V5 to V7 stage. Don't need as much water and still get a yield response with the fungicide. I am actually using Halex as a pre emerge if i get to it soon enough...MikeM

Re: Corvus, Lumax, Lexar questions

I'm not sure why you don't want to apply any 2,4-D...unless you're afraid any neighboring beans will get out of the ground before the volatility of the 2,4-D is blown away.  Ester very rarely injures corn seedlings...but I do remember grabbing a bottle of Amine once...by mistake...and got a good rain on the field before the corn tried to come up. It was rather ugly! I've used Lumax before..and liked how it worked over a lot of weeds. I think some Lumax with a little generic glyphosate might be a great burndown....

Re: Corvus, Lumax, Lexar questions

I ended up using Corvus.  It tales a long time to work but seems to be doing a job now that it got some rain to activate.  I was staying away from 2,4D because of some comments by my extension agent who was concerned that it caused more problems in corn that was generally recognized and when we talked it was cool and wet.  This guy is pretty competent so I took his advice seriously.  Others have also suggested to use 2,4D.

Re: Corvus, Lumax, Lexar questions

The last few years we have used both Lumax and Corvus broadcast with the planter.  We try to use them as a one pass option.  Somtimes have to post spray around the edges and endrows of fields where grass pressure is greater.

We used mostly Corvus this year and added crop oil on the no-till acres to help the burndown.  Also added 1 quart of atrazine per acre on both notill and tilled fields.

Another program that has worked is a preemerge appication of Bicep Lite followed with a post application of half rate of Lumax.  That gives you a little more Dual for late grasses and about the regular post rate of Callisto.

I have been a great believer in Callisto ever since it came out.  We try to stay away from glysophate on corn to help reduce weed resistance development.  Even though 95% of my corn is roundup ready.  Save it for the soybeans.

Good luck with all of you that are fighting flooding and saturated soils.  My favorite saying is -- "If it was easy everyone would be doing it!"
