Cover crop hurting yields?

All,

I was at a meeting yesterday at Iowa State and visited with a banker-farmer in northern Iowa. He said in some areas he serves, cover crop farmers are struggling with dinged yields (about 20 bushels in corn) that they attribute to competition from cover crops.

I can't remember if it's from incomplete kills or not, but was wondering--have you ever run into this or know of anyone who has run into it?

Thanks,

Re: Cover crop hurting yields?

It's hard to tell if this is farmer legend/prejudice, less-than-optimum procedures or reality.  I'm not a big cover-crop fan and this is one reason.

I think cover crops are a sexy and pat solution that sound better than it actually works.  There are other ways to address the issue.
