Crop damage from a reemergence herbicide

All,

I'm lifting this off a tweet that Aaron Hager, U of Illinois Extension weeds specialist sent a few weeks ago. The farmer used dicamba as a burndown on non-dicamba-tolerant soybeans.

Have you ever run into damage like this on dicamba or any other pre? I may do some things on crop injury from herbicides later on this year and just curious as to if injury like this or any other herbicides is getting to be more common.

This is what can happen if you don't follow the planting interval when applying dicamba as a burndown before non-DT soybean

Seen it many times - 1 pint = 1 week - 1 QT = 1 month before you can plant - either corn or beans -

Also have seen damage from Sharpen and Authority XL - I think the main problem is from cool or cold + wet  soil conditions  , the beans just lay there in the chemicals -

Don't think it's becoming more common - but the stars just have to line up right

Gil, Ive had too much pre-emerge herbicide damage in soybeans to continue using pre's. A good tillage pass in the spring seems to help out a lot with marestail.

Blacksandfarmer,

Is this just on your lighter/sandier soils, or across your farm?

I hadn't given that much thought to this until the other day when I saw a couple articles on injury on the web. I used to do quite a bit of stories on this before the advent of Roundup Ready, but it seems like it either went away when Roundup post emergence worked so well for those first few years.

Best,

Gil

I haven't used dicamba for forever.  I've used 2,4-D often but wait a week for corn and more for soybeans.  I don't know of any damage.
