Cultivating makes you feel like a Farmer

Seems like the roots get air and the plants look better and weeds haven`t yet built up tolerance to a cultivator sweep   🙂

Re: Cultivating makes you feel like a Farmer

Cultivating takes time,, involves iron blight, doesn't work so well in no-till or where there is a lot of residue and promotes erosion.  Other than nostalgia, there is not much to recommend it except on flat land that is plowed.

But what does it mean to feel like a farmer?  I know men who would be just as happy on a D-8 Cat as on a tractor, or who would be just as happy driving the Budweiser hitch as working cattle, or walking along with a hunting dog and shotgun as scouting beans.  Sometimes we confuse the environment with the job.  The kind of person just as happy being a policeman or a soldier or an air traffic controller or some other button-down type of work place.

Now me, I like marketing grain.  Cultivating?  Not so much.  🙂

Re: Cultivating makes you feel like a Farmer

You can cultivate sidehills just fine, you have to "crab' up hill, just like you`re on final in a 172 Cessna and you have a crosswind component of 17 knots...you`re crabbing, the runway is about like coming straight at the cabin door window and that`s kind of what you do cultivating "crab uphill".  Myself I have a favorite row to glance at, for me the right outside row, it`s set a tiny bit closer, if that one isn`t covering or plowing out the others are probably fine.

Cultivating makes you "feel like a farmer" because "cultivating is what we are supposed to be doing, caring for the desirable plants, just as generations before us have done for thousands of years.  Sure we now have sprays and I spray, however in the 10,000yrs of agronomy only about the last 25 have relied solely on chemicals for crop husbandry.

I love the smell of the soil, the windows on the cab are open and the aroma of the freshly turned earth is right there.   The engine sound 1500-2000rpms, neighbors going by waving, pride in just you and cold steel killing undesirable plants (weeds) in your field.   That is what it feels like to be a farmer.

I hate to tell you this, but I always land in a slip, not a crab, except when I'm landing my glider with long wings, when, yes, I'll admit I use the crab.

Do not put your cultivator in a "slip" or I guarantee you won`t like the results.    🙂
