Fertilizing, Discing, and Planting in the same day

Hi there,

I am just starting out farming this year with a 68 acre field that I plan on putting in Corn. As I am still active duty in the Marines, timing is very important considering I will be flying home to complete the necessary field work. My question is, are there any immediate drawbacks to putting down fertilizer, working the ground, and planting all in the same day? The only work that will be complete prior to this proposed op is the soil test. Also, I am running with an AC WD45, 10' kewannee disc, a leased broadcast fertilizer buggy, and a John Deere 494 4 row planter. I am currently set up for 30" rows. Any advice would be appreciated.

Even if you have no breakdowns you won't be able to fertilize, disc and plant 68 acres in one day with that equipment. If you paid a grain elevator to spread the fertilizer needed to make good corn, you might be able to make it work in a day.... I still have my doubts.

Would there be any harm to the seed if fertilizer was spread that close to planting?

I remember as a kid disking with a 9 foot disk and a WD 45 and 3rd gear turned the exhaust cherry red. I don't think you could cover 4 acres an hour.  Maybe if you pulled the planter behind the disk but you would be in 2nd gear for sure    Good luck

I doubt if your broadcast fertilizer rate would be high enough to bother.  If you banded all the fertilizer directly on the seed row it might be a problem.

Ask your local county extension agent or the fertilizer dealer what they think.

Thank you very much. Won't be doing any fertilizer banding, just broadcasting
