Herbicide injury
All,
This relates somewhat to the question I had previously on preemergence hericides. Have you exerperienced any injury with them? Or with postemergence herbicides, for that matter?
The reason I ask is due to glyphosate-resistant weeds, weed scientists at seminars I have attended are advising farmers to mix up their herbicide strategies. Some of these are older compounds, some of which are more prone to injury crops than newer ones.
Thanks,

Re: Herbicide injury
I have used residual herbicides in crops for quite a few years, even before there were roundup resistant weeds in the area. I still ended up with resistant weeds, thanks to the neighbors that sprayed only Roundup until it no longer worked. In beans I have used Envive or Fierce (both contain Valor) for the last several years. The only injury I have noticed is if there is no rain between spraying and emergence, then a shower when the beans are small there is some yellowing of the plants. I have been told this is from the herbicide on the soil surface being splashed onto the small plants. As far as I can tell the beans have always grown out of this condition rather quickly and without any yeild penalty. Patrick

Re: Herbicide injury
Thanks Patrick. I know there were some injury issues that popped up in IA/IL last year, but if I remember right, it seems like those farmers experienced what you found--that they grew out of it. Hope that's the case every time, that has to be pretty disconcerting to see stunted/yellowed beans right off that bat at the season's start.
Best,
Gil

Re: Herbicide injury
There were a few fields around here last year that had more severe problems and Kevin Bradley from MU was even doing some testing. All of those fields were fall sprayed with residuals and then sprayed again in the spring with residuals. Mr. Bradley's opinion was that "it was the perfect storm" just didn't have the enviromental conditions for the fall chemicals to breakdown and then stacking the spring chems on top was just too much. Re: Herbicide injury
Thx, Pat. Your last post reminded me to block off some time around 7/10 or so for the MU weeds tour at the Bradford Center by Columbia. I had a conflict last year and couldn't make it, but Dr. Bradley always has some good stuff to show/say at that tour and I know he has talked about herbicide injury before. That and waterhemp and waterhemp and more waterhemp!

I have never left one of Kevin Bradleys talks without at least some food for thought. Patrick
