Poll: When will you start harvest?

 (Updated, 9/12) Freese-Notis Weather is calling for cool weather and "end of growing season"  this week:

"There is no question ... that we will end the growing season in parts of the Midwest on Thursday morning; the question right now is determining exactly how cold it will get and how extensive the area of sub-32 degree lows will be. There will be scattered areas of North Dakota and northern Minnesota (as well as a lot of the eastern Canadian prairie growing area) that see temperatures to 32 degrees or lower already by Wednesday morning. On Thursday morning, I would look for lows of 32 degrees or lower for the far eastern Dakotas, far northern Iowa, western Wisconsin, and just about anywhere in Minnesota with some places getting to the upper 20s.

Are we headed to an early harvest?

Probably 10 days later than normal, except maybe for some dryland fields that just burned up.  Otherwise, things will just be too green.

  I voted normal but who really knows.  Usually beans are ready by Sep. 25th but no yellow leaves yet on the 7th.  Plenty of moisture here to fill out the later ones.

We harvested an early field of beans last year during the Iowa/Iowa State game. This year, the same bean is more yellow than green but still a couple of weeks away. I would say here in NC Iowa, harvest will be normal. not early...MikeM

MIke there was a field of corn partly taken out by the Wesley Golf course yesterday. It went down in the wind. I heard it was 21%.

Yes, I heard that also. Corn matured too fast due due to dry and on lite soil. It was hand shelled at 32% last week. Will be curious to the yield. All this from our coop's agronomist...MikeM

I would say corn in my area starts coming off in about 2 weeks. Most soybeans were planted late here in the ECB so I would say soybeans will be harvested on time or slightly later. Seed corn harvest is in full swing to my west. I talked to one of our areas largest seed corn growers and he said they are expecting 90-95% of an average crop being that seed corn is under irrigation in this area of the country. As for price hikes in seed, the grower who is also an owner of an independent seed company told me and a room full of other farmers that the additional cost will come from higher land rents paid to land owners and being that the price of the physical grain itself is higher is also part of the equation.

Well, we've recorded 17.5 inches of rain since Tuesday here in Elysburg, PA.  Looks like it's gonna be a while. Historic flooding everywhere, worst natural disaster here in a long time. Hurricane Katia is blocking tropical storm Lee from moving out to sea and we have been getting pounded!

Over half done with corn now, could be done but waiting on it to dry some more. Still watering beans, they are all planted behind flood water. Cotton 2 weeks away.
