Seed buying time?
I recently started selling seed part time for a regional seed company. I was just curious when most farmers liked to buy their corn and soybean seed. I personally prefer to buy early and take advantage of early pay discounts, but does everyone else? Thanks for the replies.

Re: Seed buying time?
Just curious, are the prices of seed coming down, staying the same, or going up? I'm going to be more astute, cautious, patient in buying my seed for 2014. I would rather the seed companies lower the price 25% since grains are down 40% than early pay discounts. I fully realize the chances for that are near zero. Seed buy this season will be different this season.

Re: Seed buying time?
The absolute last thing on my mind right now is buying seed for next year, no matter what your boss says. If your boss needs money for grower payments and payroll tell that person to get a CCC loan on their crop, I'm tapped out right now.

Re: Seed buying time?
ECIN, I don't know where prices on seed will go. The seed company I work for has not set prices for corn and beans just yet, so farmers are not being pressured to buy. I have taken the past couple weeks and stopped out on many farms. I am new to the seed business, and I find it interesting. Every farm operation is different and I find there is something to learn from many of the folks I have stopped and talked to so that I may apply that knowledge on my own farm. I am not trying to endorse or sell anything, just simply wondering if seed purchasing decisions are pretty much made prior to or after harvest. Thanks.

Re: Seed buying time?
I don't buy much corn seed, and I've never attempted to raise soybeans, but I generally purchase and pay for my milo seed before the new year but after milo harvest. I like to look at my results from the previous year as well as look at some local test plot results before I commit to any certain variety.

Re: Seed buying time?
Sandy - I was a dealer for 2 different companys over the years - one a regional and the other - a Big time out fit - as for the regional - I won top dealer 5 years in a row - they where S-beans only then expanded into the corn market - then went broke in the 80's .
Then min thing I learned - if you are selling a good product - it will sell it's self - I was not the reason for winning - The yield - standability , test weight will tell the end story -- not your sellesmanship - you only can BS so much .
KNOW your products -- inside out ! Will it take high pop.s ? if it don't TELL the customer that . What about the disease package ? is it great in one but weak in another ?
As the farmer is there in one problem he is seeingwith what he is - was useing ? Maybe your product willl fit his needs .
If the farmer asks a question and you don't know - tell them you don't BUT you will find out and call him as soon as you find out - never - never Say - well I THINK it do's that or this -
I always shell first and see what numbers are doing before I order - one thing I did use to do . was to plant different numbers I sold and see for myself what they did - didn't want to sell something I won't plant - in my area - these guys are not only farmers but dang good friends - won't what to hurt there bottom line by me selling them junk . besides - news travels fast if the beans or corn is flat and the neighbors is standing or out yields them by a ton .
Hope this helps some , AND since it's a pretty Sunday morning here ------------------------------------------------------
For you !
No Charge - lol
