Soil health and landlords

All,

Does the discussion of soil health via tools like no-till, cover crops, etc. ever come up during landlord-tenant negotiations? I had a piece last year come over from Indiana last year where there was some questions about it, but I never followed up on it.

Best,

Re: Soil health and landlords

I think soil health is a concern for many landlords.  In some cases, landlords choose a tenant because of the tenants known tillage practices so the subject doesn't come up.  You rent to a farmer who farms the way you want and you don't have to talk about it much.

In other cases, it's all upfront and in the lease.

And some landlords don't seem to care.  This includes absentee and maybe those who use farm managers.
