Soy population question here.....

I'm planting soys here for the first time, be gentle please.......

Am using the old JD feed cups and bet I'm getting 200,000+ per acre. Is under full irrigation and in 30" rows. Seed is small at 3000 per pound.

Also, any herbicide I can use to spike my glyphosate with to get some residual control. Especially to control grasses.

Thanks for any/all help and guidance.

If you`re planting very many acres JD or Kinze bean meters will pay for themselves @$180/unit or cheaper for used.  In 30" rows I wouldn`t plant much over 150,000 pop.  The meters with drop seed more uniform instead of dropping "handfulls".   Gly with do super on grass, it`s small seeded broadleaf weeds like waterhemp that gly is weak on, if grass is the main problem 2 shots of gly with take care of most grasses.  Fusilade added for volunteer  roundup corn.  Best of Luck.

BA has the population down pretty good in my opinion..before I read his reply I was thinking 140,000. As far as a residual product...I'm not sure when you want to spray it. Are you talking about with a post application of Glyphosate..or in a pre-emerge-burndown situation. Post emerge..I believe you can spray Outlook for grasses up to the third trifoliate stage. It will also help on those small seeded broadleaves that BA was talking about.

I plant 140k/acre in 30" rows.  The herbicide may depend on your weeds and where you're at.  Your local extension agent should be able to help or try one ofthe land grant university web sites like Iowa State's Weed Page.

Re: Soy population question here.....

Population count will vary on many factors.  Date of planting, seed variety, row width, and soil type.  The earler you plant and the better the ground would mean less seed per acre.  Late panting in clay soil as is my case I will be planting 200,000 seeds per acre in 15" rows.

On another note:  Doesn't your planter plant pounds per acre, not seeds per acre?  If this is the case you may have to cut back a setting or 2 from what your maual says or you may be planting more than you intend to.
