Soybean Cyst Nematode resistant varieties

All,

Have you had any problems with Soybean Cyst Nematode (SCN) resistance to SCN-resistant varieties?

Gregg Tylka from Iowa State has talked about it at several meetings I've talked to. More than 95% of current SCN-resistant varieties share the same source of SCN resistance, PI88788. The thinking is that using the same control over and over again will result in resistance, just as it did with glyphosate.

I honestly can't say I'm seeing any resistance, but I haven't checked specifically for it.  It's not a hot topic of conversion in the farmer coffee shop that I've heard.

It absolutely will. In SEMO, we have numerous 2, 5, 7, etc. Only 2 ways to control it, plant a multi race variety or treat with a nematicide. On our sandy soils, a 3 and 14 only bean won't make it.

Re: Soybean Cyst Nematode resistant varieties

All,

The situation in MO is interesting....the kind of thing that ISU's Greg Tyler has been talking about the past couple years. I know the University plant pathologists/nematologists are really worried about this. Think it will be akin to the resistance with glyphosate that started proliferating 10 years ago.

Re: Soybean Cyst Nematode resistant varieties

They may well be correct. 10 years ago race 2, 5, 7 weren't really heard of. A multi race nematode bean at that time was only in non GMO beans out of the Mizzou but now folks are seeing major yield loss from planting a 3 and 14 only bean and outside of the breeding that Grover Shannon has done at MU there are no true multi race beans in any major seed companies supply. To them it's a niche, to farmers in my area, its a pretty large niche.
