Starter Fertilizer

I am looking for a little help.  I am wondering how much fertilizer guy are putting on when they plant?  roughly cost per acre and gallons per acre.  I know there are alot of different liquids to put down, and I am open to all options, just looking for rough ideas on cost per acre and type and gallons per acre some of you are putting down.

12 gallons per acre of 10-34-0 placed 2x2.

Haven't checked cost yet for 2010.  If $850/ ton, cost per acre would be around @ $60/acre.

I have always tried to put down my total phosphorous need with my starter (10-34-0). That will end up being in the neighborhood of 10-15 gallons/acre. I have a system on my planter that splits the application with 4-5 gallons going in furrow..and the rest injected to the side of the row (2x2). If I had a seperate set of tanks on my tractor...I would inject more nitrogen in the 2x2 placement..up to a total of 50 units/acre...and then add enough 10-34-0 to the mix to bring my phosphorous level up to the amount called for by my soil tests.

For several years we have put down about 12gal. (2X2) of 28% & 10-34-0 1/2 & 1/2 mix, This year our early corn ended up with a terrible stand after 3 weeks of cool wet weather, our nieghbor who planted the same day right accross the road with no starter got a perfect stand, only difference we could come up with was we pulled a packer behind our finisher, he didn't & we put down starter he didn't. I'm wondering if that 28% with the cool temps & alot of rain hurt our stand by leaching over to the seed. Any thoughts?

Interesting question..so let's just break it down and think about it. You're asking whether approximately 25 units of nitrogen applied 2x2 from the seed might have caused it to not germinate. I'm skeptical..because if the fertilizer band is placed in the proper place..then the fertilizer would have to move horizontally in the soil to get to the swelling seed...and the chances of that happening aren't very good. They say the biggest problem with fertilizer close to the seed is the salt effect...limiting the amount of water available to the seed for germination..and you say you had wet cold conditions. In our area..5 gallons of 10-34-0 is considered fairly safe in the row for germination...but in a dryer area it might be too much. I'm much more inclined to believe that the seed was different (even different lots of the same hybrid), there was a difference in seed treatment, there was less seed to soil contact for some reason in one field than another...or maybe..and I've seen this happen, with slightly worn units on a planter..the unit is following the fertilizer opener too closely, and it got the seed too close to the band.

I use dry fertlizer in a 2X2 band becasue it it cheaper

What is the cost difference to run dry 2x2 v.s. liquid? and where are most people (Geographically) using liquid?
