Wheat after corn.

The guy I share crop a few acres with wants to try wheat this fall. We were a little later than I wanted planting corn on his place. I sprayed one quart of atrazine (4.4 lbs I think) the first of June. We have had lot of rain this summer. Not sure of the total rainfall but not many big downpours lots of little half inch every day and a half or so kind of stuff. The label says no wheat till next year. Has anybody every tried it under these conditions.

I believe a qt. of Atrazine is the equivelant of 1 lb.  Patrick

Re: Wheat after corn.

Pat is right Buck --- The Label sez that a  max.of 2.5 lbs. A.I. = 5 pts. in one year . Also if applied after June 10 - do not rotate to other crops - other than corn or sorghum .

Re: Wheat after corn.

All above responses are correct.  Wheat following corn was my best wheat in 2013, but on the flip side the 2012 corn failed due to drought.  The ground had 130 units of N carryover going into wheat due to the corn failure.  Last fall I applies 1.5# atrazine to 2013 corn ground and another .5# atrazine in April of this year.  I'm planning on seeding all 2013 corn acres to winter wheat about 1-2 weeks following corn harvest.  My advice to you, gather a small pale of soil and plant a few wheat seeds into it and do a germination test.  If you've received that much rain the atrazine might be all but gone, but I would definitely test a few parts of the field before going through the work and expense of planting the field.  Just my nickels worth.

Re: Wheat after corn.

Buck your in Ohio? You had a big fusarium outbreak? Wheat on corn substantially improves the risk of future fusarium infection. I can't plant wheat on corn in Ontario and be insured... Nor is it timely planted.

It's basically an easy way to get 80 bu corn

Others like shaggy might be able to do it: no disease inoculation/ wrong climate for infection
