Why are my ears drooping?

Have an early variety of corn about to hit black layer and ears are starting to droop. Thought maybe ECB but no signs of boring. Corn is fixed ear type but ears are really large diameter due to good growing weather. Wondering if this variety just has weak ear shanks or if there is some other problem.

Is it Pioneer genetics? I had the same problem a few years back with one of their hybrids.

Hank - that may not be a bad thing - if you have been getting all the rain that I have been getting - I wish mine would droop - it keeps the rain out and won't sprout on the ends .

Re: Why are my ears drooping?

The variety is a 103 day Syngenta number. Weusually plant 107 to 115 in this area, but I wanted to plant wheat this fall so tried a few acres of this earlier corn. Agree about the likelhood of earlier drying and less chance of sprouting in this rain forest weather we've been having, but just concerned if it will start dropping ears on the ground. Don't have any pigs or fence left to go get em if they do.

Hank ole buddy - thats what they make electric fence for - lol   I will do some checking and see if I can find out a reason - a 103 day corn ? It just may be time to do the deal - you are use to seeing that 115 day stuff .

Have a good one !
