Why is it snowing in April? Will this delay your planting of corn? Mike
How much snow did you get? Chicago's ground is covered but very little accumulation.

MIke we didn't get to much here. but we got another 6 tenths of rainovernight. that brings our 3 day total to just over 2 inches. Dad went for a drive yesterday down to Renwick and said it was snowing pretty hard there just before noon. it didn't stick but it makes you wonder. 2 weeks since we planted our oats here. Nothing up yet. I have never had to replant oats but this might be the year?
It is also slowing down hay development here. If this keeps up first cutting won't come till June here. we started on the 19th of may last year!
As to the reason for this weird weather............. I blame ethol! HE HE If we had a higher sulfur content fuel or just plain less green energy the global warming would be in full swing and we could get some heat. But instead we are all greenie weenies and we are losing our heat! (sorta tongue in cheek on the last part!)

I think it will be 5 days or more as a minimum and maybe longer than that before we see much time in the field.

15 miles southeast of Iowa City accuweather report for the next 15 days through May 4th shows the same mostly cooler than normal and lots of rain. If it dries up the second week of May might get to field by middle of May.

DUH, of course it will delay planting. Any moisture during planting time delays it, snow is worse because the first warm sunny day is needed for melting and no drying happens til the ground is bare.
The reason it is snowing in april is that it is cold enough for the moisture falling from clouds to freeze and fall as tiny ice crystals which to gether form snowflakes, if it is warmer the moisture will fall as raindrops. You will notice that if the temp within a few degrees of 0c or 32f, precipitation can be either rain or snow or a mixture of both; if its colder snow will fall, if its warmer rain will.

Woke up to 6.5 inches of wet snow yesterday morning, and found 1.5 inches of rain water in the rain gauge from the day before. Our small farm community had several trees and a power line on the ground, but the surrounding areas just had a lot of rain. Im glad our precipitation didnt all come in the form of rain!
Starting to get a bit anxious about the field work, weeds are getting established. We are dryland so there is a positive side to a wet spring too.
Our small family run farm business is located in Eastern Washington State, just North of Spokane,WA.
