100W incandescent bulbs redux

A repeat of the death of some 100W bulbs.  I was surprised by this article that things are a bit more complicated than we'd all been led to belive.  Well written descritption of what will happen and why.

Re: 100W incandescent bulbs redux

I got a rude awakening a few weeks ago, my 175 watt mercury yardlight went on the fritz.  It`s 22` high and the bulb and switch was 1 yr old so I thought I`d look for a whole new unit. Fleet Farm, Menards, Home Depot, Bomgaars all only had 65-120 watt Halide yardlights...crap. I needs my 175 Watts!  Fleet Farm luckily still carries the mercury 175 bulbs bought a couple, dropped one climbing up, turned out all I did need was a new bulb.  The only place I could find a new mercury yardlight was on E-Bay and they knew what they wanted.

Re: 100W incandescent bulbs redux

I understand the reasons for lowering energy consumption and efficiencies, but as my wife says, the newer lights do not shine as brightly and the room is still less visible.  I agree with her, for now.

Not sure if this fits in, but some vehicles have lights that are much brighter that even on dim, they are difficult to see when driving into the light.  That's my main pet-peeve with the new lights.

Re: 100W incandescent bulbs redux

My 5 year old is getting to the age where we were considering getting her an EZ bake oven, the kind that you make one little brownie at a time, using a 100W light bulb.

The old ones will not be usable once we can't get 100W bulbs anymore, but they now make an 'updated' version, that uses a heating element, instead of a 50 cent light bulb.  Price is $50, instead of the $20 for the old style.  We got her a sled, instead.  Waiting for the price of the new style to come down, before we get her one.

Re: 100W incandescent bulbs redux

The CFLs just don't give the same lind of light...I had a tough time stitching my GS's stocking for his first Christmas.  Will say this is one reason I really like Kindle Fire's bright screen.

Mike asked me to buy 100-watt bulbs for the hog house a month or so ago.  I grabbed a couple of flats of them at Lowe's, just to replace what has blown since he ran out.  They are used rarely, mostly when washing the building, or loading out early.

I wouldn't want to have to buy a couple hundred of anything else to keep the lights on.... I am okay with the curlies for ambient light, but keep a clear crystal incandescent over the dining table,  and where I do certain tasks.
