In Iowa, corn and soybeans are all that make sense year in and year out.  Hay is too variable - when you have it so does everyone and if your out so are the rest.  Plus fewer cows to eat it.


Anything else in Iowa is a niche crop.  Wheat.  Christmas trees.  My mischanthus.  Oats.  Timothy.  Flowers.  Vegetables.  Only a little money in any of them and you have to be first in line.


Even specialty corn and soybeans doesn't work most of the time.


Grow the most you can and try to figurer out how to market it better than others.


And hope the fringe areas switch right for our benefit.
